HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER: WE'RE NOT FRIENDS (TV)
Summary
One in this series of legal dramas about a hard-nosed Philadelphia law professor who recruits her students to work in her firm – leading to their entanglement in a variety of ethically questionable schemes.
In this episode, Laurel is forced to confess to an affair with Frank after she receives his call while hiding in the woods with the other students after disposing of Sam. In the past, Laurel speaks up in class about "stealth jurors." Bonnie overhears as Sam and Annalise furiously argue about his affair with Lila, which he claims was merely a summer fling. Wes, unaware of the truth, suggests that the man in the photos could be a viable suspect through which to save Rebecca. Later, Annalise and her students take on the case of 17-year-old Ryan Remini, who fatally shot his abusive cop father to save his mother. Annalise explains how to select jurors most likely to be sympathetic to one's client because of their personal backgrounds and experiences. However, the entire trial seems doomed when, due to a lack of demonstrable evidence, Judge Lee forbids any mention of the elder Remini's alleged abuse against his family.
Bonnie assigns the students "pet jurors" that they are to investigate – without actually crossing the line into tampering. Annalise soon tricks Prosecutor Barker into prompting a witness to mention the abuse, as documented through Ryan's personal blog, thus allowing it back into evidence. Rebecca visits Wes, wondering if he truly believes her to be innocent. As Annalise obsesses over Sam's betrayal, Nate accuses her of getting him fired, believing that she informed his superiors of his illegal searches. He reveals that Sam actually was not at Yale on the night of Lila's murder, meaning that he again is a potential suspect. In the woods, Laurel finally answers Frank's calls in order to establish an alibi, and he promises to "do anything" to make amends with her. In the past, Kan reminds Laurel that they cannot technically tell the jurors about the nullification option. Annalise confronts Bonnie, having figured out that she was the one who spoke to the police about Nate in order to secure Rebecca's confession tape.
As Mr. Remini's colleagues take the stand to refute the abuse claims, Connor uses a dating app to get one of the jurors dismissed for bias. Mrs. Remini vividly describes her husband's cruel behavior, though the prosecution argues that he did not pose an "imminent threat" when Ryan shot him. Michaela panics when she loses her engagement ring in the woods. When the students determine that they have likely convinced only nine jurors, Laurel takes drastic steps and plants a document describing jury nullification near the courtroom. Frank learns about her trick and tells Annalise, though declines to blame Laurel directly. Annalise in turn tells the D.A., leading to a mistrial. As a result, Ryan's case is demoted to juvenile court, meaning that he will receive a far lighter punishment; the Remini family is deeply relieved.
Later, Sam admits that he was not at Yale on the night of Lila's death, but again denies harming her. Annalise then arranges for him to question Rebecca under the guise of a pre-trial psychological evaluation; she suggests that Lila's secret married lover, whom she called "Mr. Darcy," is likely guilty of her murder. In the future, Laurel visits Frank and produces the murder weapon, the trophy. In the past, she confronts him about protecting her from Annalise. The two kiss, but a guilt-ridded Laurel then runs to Kan's side instead. After her "evaluation," a frantic Rebecca calls Wes and tells him that Annalise and Sam are "in on it" together. When Wes studies the background of the lewd photo, he recognizes the Keatings' wallpaper and realizes the true identity of "Mr. Darcy." Includes commercials and promos.
