MAUDE: MAUDE'S NEW FRIEND (TV)

Summary

One in this series of comedy programs, a spin-off of "All in the Family," about the outspoken, liberal Maude Findlay and her family.

In this episode, Walter is greatly annoyed to hear that Maude's novelist friend Barry Witherspoon will be stopping by for drinks, feeling that he is a "pompous windbag." Maude defends him, however, pointing out that his latest book is a bestseller. She furthermore accuses Walter of disliking Barry because he is gay, a revelation which seems to shock Arthur, declaring that she is the only one in the house to have a healthy view of homosexuals. Walter, however, argues that she merely likes to "show him off" as proof that she is a hyper-tolerant liberal. Barry arrives in the midst of the dispute and Walter is again annoyed at his condescending attitude, particularly when he makes a crack about Walter's beloved mustache as they take a group photo.

Maude promises to calm things down, but Walter loses his temper when Barry insults him again and orders him out of the house. He clarifies that he is not doing so for "that reason." Barry counters that he is simply jealous that he, Barry, is Maude's "intellectual lover." Maude laughs off the idea and Barry decides that she is simply a "guilt-ridden liberal" who holds subconscious prejudices against gays and does not really value him as a friend. Maude is shocked at her own behavior, but Walter cheerfully assures her that everyone, despite their good intentions, has biases. Commercials deleted.
