VEEP: NEW HAMPSHIRE {THIRD SEASON FINALE} (TV)

Summary

The third season finale in this satirical comedy series about sharp-tongued former Vice President – now President – Selina Meyer and her staff. In this episode, Selina and her staff are overjoyed at her sudden ascendancy to the top job, though Amy is still concerned about the upcoming New Hampshire primary. Selina begins planning her first acts as POTUS, including the firing of Secretary of Energy Leslie Carr, and as the two staffs begin to merge, Selina begs the badly-overworked Ben to stay on as her acting Chief of Staff. On the day of the swearing-in, Amy encourages the New Hampshire volunteers, including the clueless Richard and Kelly, as Selina prepares to converse with a variety of foreign leaders. Kent corners Dan and informs him that he must resign over the false rumors about rival Danny Chung's torture policies, but Dan begs for a few hours to remedy the situation. Ben flatly denies tipping him off about the rumor, and Dan turns to his nemesis Jonah and offers him a job in Selina's White House – on the condition that he lie to the press and deny any responsibility for the Chung story.

Sue is annoyed when Kent attempts to "move in" next to her, and Selina's "low-key" inauguration is interrupted by Mike's fidgeting. Jonah realizes Dan's trick when he is hit with a barrage of Internet scorn and subsequently forbidden from working closely with Selina, and Selina's first speech as President is marred by her noisy shoes, a gift from the hapless Gary. She is then stunned to realize that she fired the wrong person, having confused Leslie with someone from the State Department, and Mike hastily attempts to explain the error to the press. Realizing that the mistake has hurt her in the polls, Dan tries to recruit Jonah's uncle and his "bucket of votes," though Jonah tries to make a number of demands in return. Selina hurries to New Hampshire to boost her public appeal with a photo op at a firefighters' uniform factory, though Ben then informs her that she is not actually, truly president, as she misspoke the oath because of Mike's antics. A local judge is quickly summoned as Selina scrambles to reinstate Leslie, having angered Iran with the firing, and she is forced to sweet-talk Jonah's uncle for his "blue-hair ballots" before her second, more "relatable" swearing-in at the factory. Later, the staffers all wait anxiously for the results of the primary and are dismayed to learn that Selina has come in third.
