AUSTIN & ALLY: MYSTERIES & MEDDLING KIDS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a pair of teenage musicians trying to advance their careers.
Austin, Ally, Trish, and Dez attend a 1970’s-themed costume dance party. They dress as characters from a 1970’s animated series, “Groovy Gort and the Mystery Bunch,” Dez’s favorite cartoon, even arriving with a pet goat. Later in the night, Ally find that her notebook of song lyrics is missing, distressing her greatly. Dez and Austin are excited at this, as it gives them the opportunity to solve a “real case” like the ones faced by the animated characters they idolize. They attempt to track the thief to the school library, where they are chastised by the librarian, Mrs. Kravitz, for bringing their goat inside. They question her and she says that she spotted someone carrying a book matching their description of Ally’s songbook, giving them a description of someone in a disco costume. They return to the party and find several partygoers with costumes matching Mrs. Kravitz’s description: Chuck, who Austin notes is “always out to get” them, Kimmy, who holds a grudge against Ally for getting voted as prom queen, and Miles, whom they distrust for being “quiet.” Ally also discovers a note slipped into her purse by the culprit claiming that she “has something [they] want” and threatening to destroy the songbook unless they get it.
They decide to split up to spy on each suspect individually. Trish discovers a bookmark from Ally’s book in Miles’ back pocket, but he escapes before she can accuse him of theft. Dez finds scraps of the note left by the thief, apparently leading to Kimmy’s locker. Ally and Austin spy on Chuck and overhear him singing lyrics from a song Ally recently wrote into her book. They decide to assemble all of the suspects to interrogate them simultaneously, and Trish cajoles and threatens them in an attempt to get answers. Miles claims to have no knowledge of the bookmark; Kimmy claims that the cut-out letters found near her locker were for a collage she was making; and Chuck says he found Ally’s new song in his locker, mistaking it for a plea from his ex-girlfriend to get back together with her. Ally is unsure of how to proceed, as each suspect seems to have plausible alibis. Chuck suddenly vanishes and everyone races after him, and Ally receives a mysterious text message demanding that she come to a photo booth in five minutes to retrieve her book. The thief, whose features are obscured by a black cloak, ambushes Ally there and traps her in the photo booth.
Austin, Trish, and Dez soon realize that Ally is missing, and Mrs. Kravitz offers to help Austin search the library for her. The goat inadvertently leads Dez and Trish to where Ally is trapped, and they free her. Ally claims that Mrs. Kravitz was the one who trapped her there, and they believe that she is the thief and that Austin is now in danger. They return to the library as Mrs. Kravitz offers Austin a stack of pancakes. She attempts to flee and the group chases her, eventually apprehending her when the goat tackles her to the ground. They realize that Mrs. Kravitz is disguising her true identity with a mask, and removing it reveals that she is actually Brooke, who explains that she stole the songbook as part of a complex scheme intended to isolate Austin from the others in order to spend time with him. She also explains that she planted evidence on Chuck, Kimmy, and Miles in order to further distract them. They get Brooke to return the book, much to Ally’s relief. The next day, Ally, Austin, Dez, and Trish apologize to Miles, Chuck, and Kimmy for accusing them of theft. They also discover that Brooke has disguised herself as Ally when the real Ally shows up. Commercials deleted.
