BEING MARY JANE: UBER LOVE {SEASON ONE FINALE} (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about a television news personality and the conflicts in her personal and professional life.

David confronts Mary Jane over apparently stealing a sample of his sperm. He demands that she take a pregnancy test and becomes upset that she seems to find amusement in the matter. Mary Jane assures him that it would be impossible for her to get pregnant in this manner as she froze the sperm improperly. However, after some discussion David believes her and admits that he is “flattered” by this gesture, but they make things awkward and he leaves, noting that she could have simply asked him to help her get pregnant. After a moment’s thought she flags him down in her car and confesses that she is in love with him, believing that he reciprocates and is too afraid to say his true feelings. David is taken aback by this and believes that Mary Jane is having difficulty seeing the truth, although Mary Jane feels she has been “punished and tested” by David. They argue about their behavior towards each other until David leaves. The next morning at work, Mary Jane tells Kara about the incident and suspects that she may have told David about her taking his sperm. Kara, however, implies that Mary Jane already knows who did it but is unwilling to face facts.

Mary Jane finds Nichelle and accuses her of being the one who told David, although Nichelle denies this. She has grown weary of Mary Jane constantly taking advantage of her and essentially ends their friendship, calling Mary Jane “toxic.” Mary Jane still insists that Nichelle is responsible and fires her as her publicist. Later Mary Jane tells Lisa about it, and says she is glad David knows about it. Lisa starts drinking hard liquor, which Mary Jane notes is unusual for her. She confesses that she was the one who told David about the sperm, and that the fact slipped out accidentally while she was telling David off for manipulating Mary Jane. Mary Jane is shocked at this revelation and, as they become further inebriated, Lisa admits that she didn’t tell Mary Jane immediately because she was afraid of jeopardizing their friendship. In her drunken state Mary Jane calls Nichelle and leaves several voice messages offering various excuses for her behavior, although in the end she realizes that her effort was most likely futile.

Still drunk, Mary Jane and Lisa head down to David’s place in an effort to win him back somehow. He is in the midst of hosting a dinner party, and Mary Jane speaks to Ana, who remarks that the encounter “isn’t going to end well” for her. David meets with her and asks her to leave, as she is interrupting his party. Mary Jane goes on a ramble about their relationship, and tries to get David to admit that he is “punishing” her in some fashion; she calls Ana a “placeholder” and says Andre served the same function for her. David becomes upset when Mary Jane admits that she lied to him and resents the implication that Mary Jane feels as though he “used” her. He tells Mary Jane that she always had misconceptions about his financial well-being and that she “moved too soon” with him; he wants nothing more to do with her. She asks him if he would have married her if she had waited, he says she “already knows the answer” but that he would prefer not to dwell on it. She responds by yelling at him for refusing her, a self-professed “ride or die chick,” and storms out of his house.

She returns to the car with Lisa, who says she was just unexpectedly called into work to deal with a delivery of twins. Lisa insists on taking Mary Jane to Kara’s place while she goes in to work, despite still being drunk. Kara boards her car and notices that Mary Jane is highly drunk, offering to take her home. She believes that Mary Jane shouldn’t feel embarrassed about this incident, but Mary Jane reveals her affair with Andre and Kara decides to get drunk with her. Mary Jane reveals that she feels intense guilt about causing Andre and Avery to break up. Kara yells at her for treating Avery poorly and believes she should apologize to her, likening it to her own experiences surrounding her finding out about her husband’s affair. They manage to find out Andre’s address and Mary Jane visits his house for the first time. They see Andre taking the kids away from the house with a suitcase, seemingly reinforcing Kara’s accusation that Mary Jane is a “homewrecker.” Avery spots Mary Jane and approaches her, knocking on the window of the car and accusing her of being a stalker. Mary Jane and Kara are invited in by Avery, and Mary Jane issues her apology and begs her to take Andre back. Kara indirectly helps Mary Jane by calling her “despicable” for making Avery suffer as she has. However, she also feels that she “checked out on [her] marriage” and feels partially responsible for the affair. They try to give advice to Avery about what Andre wants from their marriage, but Avery is offended by this and throws them out of her house.

Kara goes home and Mary Jane’s driver Leo recommends a self-book to her; it is the same one that Mary Jane noticed in Lisa’s house the night she broke in. Mary Jane asks Leo to take her back to David’s house, but he says he cannot, and instead she elects to go home. She asks Lisa to come over and demands that she inseminate her with David’s sperm despite her earlier assertion that it would not work. Lisa argues with her but eventually capitulates, asserting that it won’t work and that it will not bring David back to her. Mary Jane stops Lisa before she can begin the procedure, admitting that she is right and that she does not want to have a baby this way. Mary Jane interviews a rabbi on her show, advocating forgiveness as a way of moving on from hardship. Andre returns to Avery, and they seem to make initial steps towards reconciliation. Mary Jane visits David’s house and returns the sample of his sperm; she bids him farewell and genuinely wishes him a good life. Unbeknownst to Mary Jane, Ana has apparently just become pregnant.
