GIRLFRIENDS: FRIED TURKEY (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a young lawyer and her tight-knit circle of friends.
Joan scrambles to prepare a Thanksgiving dinner, only to find that most of her friends have made other plans and will not be attending. Later she runs into actor Kelsey Grammer, much to her excitement, and they talk about how they dislike being alone on holidays. She ends up eating a turkey dinner alone at a restaurant, but is eventually joined by a man whom she recognizes as Washington attorney Preston C. Hall. They flirt with each other and he expresses his fondness for fried turkey; she offers to bring him over to her house to make her some, although she is confused by the idea. Davis invites himself along as well to provide the turkey, hoping to see Joan embarrass herself. Joan and Preston continue to hit it off, although Davis warns Preston in private not to hurt Joan’s feelings, as he is concerned about her as a friend. Preston and Joan try to engage in a form of foreplay, but are constantly interrupted by Davis. Ultimately they convince Davis to leave, but he changes his mind when Maya unexpectedly arrives. She left Darnell’s Thanksgiving dinner after a fight with him and his family, and Joan offers her comfort despite wanting to be alone with Preston. While there, Maya also helps Joan fry her turkey, as it becomes clear that she has no idea what she is doing.
Further attempts by Joan to get closer to Preston are interrupted when William arrives, having missed his flight back home. Lynn also arrives, further stymieing Joan’s efforts. Preston begins to feel that he is disrupting things with his presence and says he should leave, but Joan pleads with him not to. Maya plunges the turkey into a pot of boiling oil, and a bit of it splashes onto Joan’s shoulder, injuring her. Preston stays to treat her wound, and Toni arrives as well after getting frustrated with her own Thanksgiving family gathering. Preston decides he has had enough and prepares to leave again, but disaster strikes when Joan’s grill catches fire. This sends everyone into a panic, but the fire is eventually extinguished, and everyone leaves having devised solutions to their individual problems. Finally alone with Preston, Joan finally initiates a romantic embrace with him, but he has to leave to catch a flight to Washington D.C., promising to meet with her again when he returns.
