ONE ON ONE: WHEN FLEX GOT BREANNA {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The premiere of this comedy series about a divorced sportscaster in Baltimore raising his teenage daughter.

Sportscaster Flex Washington’s teenage daughter Breanna is moving away from Baltimore with her mother, although she wishes that he could move with them as well so they could spend more time together. However, Flex does not wish to contend with his ex-wife Nicole. Nicole soon arrives unexpectedly and announces that she received a grant to conduct a study of marine mammals, and that they will be moving to Nova Scotia for a year. Flex and Breanna are less than enthused with this announcement, and Breanna proposes that she stay with Flex for the duration. They manage to convince Nicole to give Flex a chance with Breanna, although Nicole believes that Flex will change his mind and is incapable of caring for Breanna due to his bachelor lifestyle. Breanna feels that Flex’s “no rules” approach will ensure that her year with him will be great fun. The next morning, Flex’s friend and Breanna’s godfather Duane arrives, believing that Breanna’s presence will disrupt their “flow,” thus preventing them from hooking up with women. Flex, however, believes that his mutable work hours and the assistance of his parents will allow him to look after Breanna. Flex’s parents, Eunice and Robert, arrive to help take care of Breanna, criticizing Flex for what they feel is an inability to adequately provide for her. They admonish him for wanting to go out instead of cleaning up his apartment and determining arrangements for Breanna’s education and health.

Flex soon finds that raising Breanna presents several unforeseen difficulties, such as when she attempts to try on lingerie at a mall. However, he becoming distracted when he starts flirting with one of the saleswomen. That night he attempts to send Breanna away with his parents in order to facilitate a double-date with himself, Duane, the saleswoman, and her friend. Breanna, however, is disappointed that Flex apparently does not want to spend time with her, and she manages to drive the saleswoman away. Flex asserts parental authority by grounding Breanna for being disrespectful, further upsetting her. The next day, a baseball game Flex was supposed to cover gets rained out, and he takes the opportunity to try to spend some time with Breanna to apologize for punishing her. However, when he gets home he finds that Breanna has organized a party with several of her friends. He attempts to break it up, but she ridicules him, forcing him to discipline her in the same manner as his parents did to him.

Later he sends Breanna to Duane so that he can have the saleswoman over to his apartment again. However, Duane arrives and reveals that he lost track of Breanna at a movie theater. They prepare to go search for her but Flex’s parents arrive with Breanna in tow. She explains that she called her grandparents to come get her because she resented being left alone, and says that Flex doesn’t care about her. Eunice and Robert talk to Flex about his parenting techniques, feeling that they did an “awful job” at raising him and advising him to start by getting to know Breanna better. To facilitate this, Flex attempts to bond with Breanna over a one-on-one basketball game, asking her questions about why she ran away. Breanna admits that she feels that she is “in the way” and unwanted in Flex’s life. Flex notes that while he has made some mistakes, he feels that Breanna can help him become a better father, albeit one who still dates women. He proposes installing some new rules around his household, and Breanna seems amenable to the idea since Flex is willing to negotiate about them. Commercials deleted.
