DEION'S FAMILY PLAYBOOK: LIFE OF PRIME {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)
Summary
The premiere in this reality series focusing on former football star-turned-coach Deion Sanders and his extended family. In this episode, Sanders explains that he is raising ten children, five biological and five foster, with the help of his mother and girlfriend. Eleven-year-old Shedeur nervously prepares to join three of his siblings at Prime Prep Academy, the charter school co-founded by his father, and Sanders meets with a group of teachers/coaches and states that the students must receive grades of at least 80 in order to be eligible for the football team. Sanders records a brief video for NFL Films, while elsewhere Shedeur frets that he does not yet have friends at his new school. Sanders then coaches his students through football practice, admitting that he refers to them all by various nicknames because of his poor memory, and he later talks with Shedeur at home, encouraging him to have confidence about his new school and social status. Shedeur is embarrassed when Sanders unexpectedly stops by his math class the next day, and Sanders' daughters debate the challenges of middle-school fashion.
Sanders talks with his students' families, stressing the importance of parental involvement, and then chats with his honorary son Jaquan Sheals, known as "Florida," as the boy receives a haircut at Sanders' in-home barber shop. Sanders' girlfriend Tracey Edmonds arrives for her biweekly stay with the family, and Sanders prepares for his team's first big game of the season, aided by "Coach B," a young special-needs student and football fan. One of the students, known as "Shorty Lo," privately asks Sanders for financial help, explaining that his family is currently in need. As the family prepares for a night out, Sanders notes that Edmonds has high-class taste in restaurants, and young Shelomi, known as "Bossy," asks Edmonds for some fashion advice, explaining that she wishes to start dressing in a more feminine style. The family plays a round of "Simon Says" over dinner, and Sanders later meets with "Mama Lo," Shorty's mother, who tearfully explains that she is out of work and is trying to get her family's belongings out of storage. Sanders, touched by the similarities to his own humble upbringing and his mother's struggles, gives her a large check.
Sanders takes Shelomi shopping for new "girly" clothes, and Shedeur's makes some new friends when his pal C.J. introduces him to a pair of classmates. The Prime Prep team prepares for its game against the fancy Parish Episcopal school, to whom they lost badly the previous year, and after a serious pep talk from Sanders, the team pulls off a victory and everyone celebrates. Sanders returns home to his family, pleased to hear that Shedeur is feeling more positively about his new school. The episode closes with highlights from the rest of the season. Commercials deleted.
