CYBILL: VIRGIN, MOTHER, CHEATER (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about a witty actress named Cybill, who finds herself in one dilemma after another as she contends with aging in the entertainment industry; her two ex-husbands, Ira and Jeff; her daughters, Rachel and Zoey; and her alcohol-loving friend, Maryann.
Maryann has Cybill ask Ira to accompany her to a disco-themed fundraiser party. She pleads with Ira, claiming she needs a “trophy date” in order to make her ex-husband and his new wife jealous; Ira agrees. Cybill receives a letter she wrote to herself 30 years ago as part of a high school writing exercise. She decides not to open it, believing that reading about her hopes and ambitions as a teenager would only depress her. Rachel confides in Cybill that she is unhappy in her marriage to Kevin and believes that he may be cheating on her. Meanwhile, Zoey discovers that Sean lied to his friend, claiming that he and Zoey had sex. She is briefly angry, but only because she has also lied about it and has a slightly conflicting account of the nonexistent experience.
The next day, Rachel shows up at Cybill’s house in an unusual outfit, and soon discovers that she is arranging an affair with her auto mechanic. Later, Cybill discovers Kevin drinking alone and comes to pick him up. He reveals that he has been anxious because he was denied tenure, and says he is not having an affair. Cybill urges Kevin to tell Rachel about this himself. Maryann and Ira reach the fundraiser, but she is extremely disoriented from taking her allergy medication with alcohol. She wreaks havoc due to her loss of balance and depth perception. Ira does his best to contain the situation, and eventually tells her not to worry so much about what her ex-husband thinks of her. Maryann feels pathetic and dejected, and literally crawls out of the party. Cybill discovers that Rachel is carrying on her affair and becomes determined to stop her.
She and Maryann discover that she is staying a motel and travel there, where Cybill confronts Rachel alone. She reveals that she has been having doubts about whether to go through with her affair, and Cybill reveals to Rachel that Kevin did not receive tenure. Rachel feels terrible about nearly destroying her marriage. They discover Sean at the motel as well and question him about his presence here, believing that he may be cheating on Zoey. Rachel confronts Kevin about his unwillingness to communicate with her about his life, and he is upset that she nearly had an affair. They get into an argument and Kevin proposes that they get marital counseling to help them overcome their problems. Zoey confronts Sean about his presence at the motel while Cybill decides to open her letter. She finds that the entire letter is about her high school sweetheart, Chip Duncan, and relates to Maryann that he ended up cheating on her. At the same time, Zoey throws Sean out of the house after he confesses that he cheated on her. Cybill does her best to comfort Zoey, although she is too upset to listen at the moment.
