DIAGNOSIS MURDER: BLOOD WILL OUT (TV)

Summary

One in this series of mystery programs about Dr. Mark Sloan, a physician at Community General Hospital who enjoys solving murder cases with the help of his son, Steve, a homicide detective.

In this episode, Amanda performs autopsies on several victims of a restaurant shooting and is suddenly attacked by one of the "corpses," who then flees. The doctors wonder if the "undead" man is in fact the shooter, while elsewhere the mysterious figure attacks another hospital worker and steals a quantity of supplies. At the same time, Susan invites Jesse for a romantic weekend, though he frets that their plans are often waylaid by medical catastrophes. Amanda identifies the rogue John Doe as Gregory Othon; when Mark deduces that he intends to operate on himself, they find that he has removed his own bullet in one of the operating theaters. Gregory, who appears stricken by some strange disease, is found to have no background information at all, and Susan and Jesse attend to a new patient, Alana, who seems to be suffering from food poisoning.

Gregory performs tests on himself in one of the labs, and when Alana comes looking for him with a gun, he attacks and kills her and kidnaps Susan. Jesse is shocked and guilt-ridden over his patient's death, but National Security operative Martin Rutgers then bursts in and reveals that Gregory is in fact a terrorist bomber-for-hire and that Alana, his top operative, faked her illness in order to gain access to the hospital to kill him. Mark guesses that Gregory has grabbed Susan and remained in the hospital, rather than fleeing, because he requires medical assistance. Amanda, having analyzed the bullet, explains that he is suffering from a never-before-seen bacterial infection. Determined to rescue Susan, Jesse questions Gloria, the fame-seeking waitress who witnessed the shooting, while elsewhere Gregory orders Susan to assist him despite her protests that she is not trained for his particular needs.

Jesse confesses to Steve that he is terrified for Susan's safety because of his love for her, and Steve is angered when Martin suspends all other emergency services in the hospital and suggests that Susan is now a "resource" for the killer, rather than a potential victim. Jesse reveals that Gregory was seated with a reporter when the shooting started, and Mark evades Martin's ordered shut-down of all floors by protesting that he must save a patient with a liver transplant. He finds Gregory and Susan in a basement lab, and Gregory reveals that he is not a terrorist but a government operative. Gregory continues that he himself created the "plague" with which he is affected, having injected himself in order to offer proof to the reporter of Martin's plans for illegal biological weapons. He intended to then dose himself with a cure, but was shot by Martin's operatives – along with many innocent bystanders – before doing so. Martin secretly listens in when Mark contacts Steve, but Steve predicts his actions and arrests him at gunpoint as he heads to the basement. Martin smugly states that they have no proof, as the bacteria will die with Gregory, but Mark reveals that he has injected himself with the plague and plans to cure himself after telling the police and the press of the NSA's criminal actions. Later, Steve and Susan compromise and have a romantic "staycation" of sorts in the hospital. Commercials deleted.
