BERNIE MAC SHOW, THE: NIGHT OF TERROR (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series about the changes in the life of successful stand-up comedian Bernie Mac after he agrees to take in his drug-addled sister's three children. The program punctuates the narrative with confessional sequences in which characters address the camera, and subtitles occasionally appear onscreen providing additional information about the unfolding drama. In this episode, Jordan celebrates his thirteenth birthday and receives a variety of presents, including a firework rocket. Bernie is flustered when Jordan reminds him that, as a teenager, he is now allowed to stay up later, but Jordan finds himself grounded when he continues to squabble with Bryana. Vanessa advises him to avoid trouble by not letting his little sister "push his buttons," while elsewhere Wanda is excited when she is asked to serve as hostess at the school's annual action, despite having caused trouble at the previous year's event. Jordan struggles mightily to contain his frustration with Bryana's antics and manages to avoid fighting with her for an entire week, prompting Bernie to return his birthday presents – except for a certain R-rated horror movie, "Night of Terror."

Bernie and Wanda prepare to head to the auction, and when Vanessa is unavailable to babysit, they decide that Jordan is now old enough to handle the responsibility. Jordan, however, takes advantage of the evening alone to break into Bernie's cabinet and retrieve the DVD. Wanda quickly grows frustrated with the low-energy auction, suggesting to the nun in charge that they must "get the pressure up" in order to raise money for the school, while back at home Jordan is terrified by the movie, particularly thanks to a well-timed thunderstorm. Wanda takes over and tries to spice up the evening by encouraging higher bids, though her onstage "wardrobe malfunction" proves more memorable than the auction itself. A frightened Jordan ends up hiding from the storm with Bryana and attacks Bernie when he returns home, believing him to be a monstrous intruder, but he later tucks his sister into bed, having found his maturity as her big brother during their scary evening together. The program concludes with funny outtakes from the episode. Commercials deleted.
