BOARDWALK EMPIRE: RESOLUTION {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The third season premiere in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, as 1923 dawns, an unknown crime boss from New York is stalled in Tabor Heights, New Jersey when his car breaks down, and he ends murdering a passerby – and stealing his dog – over a mildly insulting comment. In Atlantic City, Nucky questions a thief, Nate, who confirms that his wheelman was one Rowland Smith. Nucky assures Nate that he was "just doing his job" before ordering Manny to execute him, while elsewhere Margaret prepares for Nucky's New Year's Eve bash and learns of aviatrix Carrie Duncan's plans to cross the country solo. At the Artemis Club, Richard serves as caretaker and guardian of the now-orphaned Tommy as Gillian cautions her girls about avoiding alcohol while "entertaining" their male guests. In Chicago, Al and Torrio confront Dean O'Banion for "encroaching" on their territory, and Al is enraged when Dean flippantly mocks his son Sonny's deafness.

Harry Daugherty visits Nucky, who notes that he is being vilified in the press and may be in danger of losing to Warren Harding in 1924, though Daugherty points out that he lives in a "glass house" as far as criminal behavior is concerned. Margaret tours the new Thompson pediatric wing at the hospital, pleased to see that her "donation" has made a difference, but she is shocked when a woman, Mrs. Shearer, stumbles in and suffers a miscarriage on the spot. Later, young Dr. Mason tells Margaret that the tragedy could have been avoided if the hospital offered proper prenatal care to local women. Van Alden, a.k.a. "George Mueller," still living in Cicero, works tirelessly selling irons door-to-door, determined to win his company's sales contest. Richard takes Tommy to a fair and is disturbed when he refers to Gillian as his "mother," realizing that the young boy is beginning to forget Jimmy and Angela. Owen finds that Rowland Smith is located in Willow Grove, Pennsylvania, and Nucky orders Manny to travel there to kill him for his part in the theft. Manny, irked at having to "work" on a holiday, bargains with Nucky for his own still. Nucky's Egyptian-themed party gets underway, and Teddy briefly joins the fun and meets showgirl Billie Kent, who entertains the guests alongside Eddie Cantor. Lucky, Meyer, Rothstein, Frankie and Remus are joined by the hot-tempered gangster from New York, revealed to be Gyp Rosetti.

Richard shows Tommy Angela's artwork, though Gillian quickly intervenes and later instructs Richard not to confuse her "son" with "stories about the past." Al arrives at O'Banion's flower shop, preparing to take his revenge for his insults, but when Van Alden enters, O'Banion quickly pretends that the salesman is his "muscle." Al retreats, and a deeply grateful O'Banion instantly offers to buy two dozen irons. Elated, Van Alden returns to his office, only to find that he has missed the cutoff and will not receive the prize money after all. He returns home in defeat, revealing that he has married Sigrid and had another child, a son. Owen flirts with Margaret at the party, though she pointedly reminds him of his affair with Katy, and Nucky is annoyed to find her "lecturing" Dr. Landau about her ideas for women's health education. As Richard ventures out to "meet a friend," Nucky distracts his guests with a chest full of expensive gifts and then meets with his associates, declaring that he is "simplifying" his business and will now sell alcohol solely to Rothstein. Rosetti, naturally, reacts with fury to the insult, and he deposits the stolen dog with a confused Margaret before exiting the party. After the guests depart, Nucky and Margaret argue heatedly about her comments to Landau and her decision to give away his land, and he soon departs, revealing that they are merely keeping up appearances as a married couple. He reunites with Billie, who is in fact his mistress. Elsewhere, Manny celebrates the new year with his wife Emma and prepares to make his belated departure to Willow Grove – but is murdered on his doorstep by Richard, as revenge for his friend Angela's death. Margaret awakens at dawn and hurries to the beach, elated to see Carrie Duncan's plane pass overheard.
