BOARDWALK EMPIRE: BLUE BELL BOY (TV)

Summary

One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, Owen's morning in bed with Katy is interrupted by a phone call from an irritable Nucky, while elsewhere Al is angered to learn that Sonny is being bullied at school. Nucky, having learned of Sheriff Sickles' "accidental" death at the filling station, informs his workers that they are to avoid Tabor Heights and take the back roads when making Rothstein's deliveries. He questions Owen about his lack of progress in finding the thief, Rowland Smith, and brushes off Eli's offers to help with the Rosetti situation, still resentful of his earlier betrayal. Margaret and Dr. Mason's attempts to establish the women's health classes are stymied by a disapproving Sister Agnes, and Nucky and Owen, aided by Agent Sawicki, explore Smith's hideout and find a vast quantity of stolen liquor. Mickey and Eli question Ramsey, Sickles' replacement, about his predecessor's highly suspicious death, and Ramsey states that he will keep Rosetti in line. Owen and Nucky capture Smith when he returns to his hideout, though they are taken aback to find that he is a teenager, and as Nucky appears to debate the best course of action, they are surprised by the arrival of several Philadelphia prohees and forced to hide in the basement.

Jake Guzik delivers a payment to Al, who criticizes his personal hygiene, and then encounters Joe Miller, one of O'Banion's men, who delivers a much harsher condemnation of his appearance and beats him severely in front of a stunned crowd. Elsewhere, Meyer and Charlie dismiss a resentful Benny and discuss Charlie's upcoming negotiation with Masseria, knowing that Meyer will not be welcome at the sit-down. Ramsey and the other Tabor Heights cops decide on a plan of action for Nucky's drivers, and Al attempts to teach Sonny how to defend himself with his fists, though he frightens the little boy to tears and ends up comforting him. With Nucky, Owen and Smith still stuck in the basement, Eddie begins to wonder about his boss' whereabouts, though Mickey decides to take advantage of his absence. Nucky questions the true reasons behind Owen's loyalty, and Al is outraged to learn of Miller's insulting treatment of Guzik. Margaret hands out flyers for her health class on the boardwalk, though most of the passersby, including Mrs. Shearer, are highly skeptical of its usefulness.

Charlie sits down with Masseria, who needles him about his association with Jews and tries to demand thirty percent of his heroin business, though Charlie stands his ground, refusing to sever ties with Meyer and Rothstein and stating that he has not "changed." A furious Rothstein calls Mickey, demanding answers for Nucky's absence and his missing liquor shipment, and Al brutally murders Miller in retaliation for his treatment of Guzik. The prohees depart the hideout at long last, and Nucky learns that Rothstein's shipment is finally on its way. Smith tries to charm Nucky into giving him a job, pointing out that he has proven his skills in the bootlegging business, but Nucky coldly executes him for the original theft, much to Owen's shock. Mickey instructs the drivers to defy Nucky's orders and drive through Tabor Heights, and when Eli's desperate warnings of the ambush are ignored, he is forced to listen from afar as Rosetti's men open fire on them. Al, returning home from killing Miller, shares an affectionate moment with his son, and Margaret reads of Carrie Duncan's demise as Nucky returns to Atlantic City and learns of Mickey's deadly blunder from Eli.
