TWO DOLLYS ON BROADWAY: CAROL CHANNING AND PEARL BAILEY (TV)

Summary

This musical special features Carol Channing, who originated the title role in Broadway's "Hello, Dolly!" in 1965, and Pearl Bailey, who took over the role in November 1967.

Channing opens the program with "Two Little Girls From Little Rock" from "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes," and Bailey sings "(Won't You Come Home) Bill Bailey," followed by "If My Friends Could See Me Now," "Little Green Apples" and "Wives and Lovers." Bailey then hastily interrupts Channing's passionate rendition of "Vesti la giubba" from "Pagliacci." Channing eagerly invites Bailey to join in for several songs originally written for men, including "Permanent Floating Craps Game in New York" from "Guys and Dolls," "Seventy-Six Trombones" from "The Music Man," "If I Were a Rich Man" from "Fiddler on the Roof," and "There is Nothin' Like a Dame" from "South Pacific."

Channing then performs an on-stage costume change and performs several comical songs, first in the style of Marlene Dietrich and then as "Cecilia Sisson," a silent film star whose transition to talkies did not go as well as hoped. Next, Channing and Bailey sing "Just the Two of Us" and sit down for "a little demitasse," then sing "Elegance" and the title number from "Hello, Dolly!". Finally, the two close with "(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free." Commercials deleted.
