SHAMELESS: CIVIL WRONGS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series, based on the British series of the same name, about the misadventures of the Chicago-based Gallagher clan, made up of six kids and one deadbeat dad, Frank. In this episode, Fiona is surprised when Jimmy tells her that he is considering re-enrolling in medical school. Frank gives a bawdy-but-charming speech about gay rights and facing prejudice from "breeders," though he tells Abraham that he wants better accommodations if he is going to continue speaking out. Lip is consumed with worry for Karen, who is in a coma after being run over by Mandy, and Fiona's dorky workmates tease her about her future fancy life with her doctor "fiancé." Debbie skips school and informs Lip that he is taking Mandy for granted, and when Frank speaks at a prep school, the boys are awed by his "honesty" and make large donations to Abraham's cause. Jody and Sheila demand answers from the doctor and learn that Karen may or may not wake up, and Ian questions Mandy about Mickey's upcoming marriage to Svetlana. Jimmy tells Beto about his plans for medical school, though admits that he intends to head back to Michigan to enroll there, and Beto points out that Estefania will not want to move.
Lip and Debbie visit Karen at the hospital, and Frank meets Alistair Huddleston, who invites him to "return to paradise" and reclaim his heterosexuality through conversion therapy. Frank is uninterested, until he learns that Alistair is willing to pay more and also provide him with "clinical fornication." Ian tells Lip that Terry is forcing Mickey to marry a prostitute, and Lip urges his brother to find someone new. Alistair puts Frank up at a swanky hotel and a waiter, Jesus, thanks Frank for his "activism" for gay rights. Veronica frets to Fiona that her mother, acting as her surrogate, is likely still not pregnant, and Fiona assures Jimmy that she supports his dream, still unaware that he is planning to leave town. Fiona's coworkers invite her to join their company softball team, and Abraham searches for an absent Frank at the Alibi Room. Frank is pleased when Alistair provides him with "viewing materials," but less so when he meets Scotty, a "former" lesbian with whom he is meant to have conversion-therapy sex. Lip admits to Sheila that he broke up with Karen shortly before the accident, and he is stunned when she mentions the reconciliatory text message and realizes that Mandy was behind it all.
Abraham finds Frank at a gay bar and offers him a better hotel room in the hotel in which he is already staying, and Jimmy admits to Fiona that he must study in Michigan to avoid losing his credits, but invites her to come along and bring the kids. Veronica and Kevin are ecstatic when Carol turns out to be pregnant after all, and Jesus spots Frank meeting with Scotty again. The doctor encourages Jody and Sheila to make Karen aware of their presence, and after the softball game, Fiona confronts Jimmy and tells him that his leaving for a year will damage their relationship, possibly beyond repair. Tipped off by Jesus, Abraham catches Frank in a very heterosexual moment with Scotty, and when Frank swears that he is truly gay, Abraham instructs him to "prove it." At the hospital, Jody attempts a very unorthodox treatment on Karen, who then awakens, and he excitedly claims that he has found "the cure for comas."
