SHAMELESS: HURRICANE MONICA (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series, based on the British series of the same name, about the misadventures of the Chicago-based Gallagher clan, made up of six kids and one deadbeat dad, Frank. In this episode, the kids are unimpressed when Monica returns to the house, sure that she will soon leave them again, and learn that Frank has not yet picked up his mother's body due to the expense of burying her. Ian talks to Mandy about Mickey, who is still in juvie, and Sheila ponders getting a nursing degree and opening a hospice after her "successful" experience with Peggy. Lip arrives at her home, having been kicked out by Fiona for dropping out of school, though Sheila tries to persuade Karen that Jody is a far better romantic choice. Fiona is annoyed when Steve tries to win her over yet again, and Monica asks her daughter to "start over" with her and swears that she can care for Liam on her own. Lip is angered when Karen explains that Sheila intends to charge him rent, though he later apologizes and Karen easily secures money from Ron by informing him that her child is his. Sheila becomes convinced that Eddie's ghost is haunting the house, and Fiona catches Frank and Monica in a "private" moment when she comes home from work early to check on Liam.
Lip next attempts to crash with Kevin, though Veronica forbids it, and Fiona tries to convince Roberta to reunite with Monica, but she refuses, explaining that Monica is a "black hole" and that Frank won her back by feigning sorrow over his mother's death. Frank proudly takes Monica back to the Alibi Room, where she mentions that she has ceased taking her bipolar medication, and Fiona is upset when they bring a number of friends home for a late-night party, disrupting the other kids' sleep. Sheila, already paranoid, is further scared when Frank and Monica crash into her house late at night, and when Lip asks Professor Hearst to help him find a job, Hearst chastises him for fulfilling his "Jerry Springer fate" and orders him to return to school. Fiona gives Monica some birth control pills, desperate to prevent yet another child, and Monica sincerely thanks her for taking care of the family. The two share a rare moment of bonding as they discuss their fractured romances, while elsewhere Lip arrives at Steve's and asks to stay with him, suggesting that it will help to speed up Steve's reunion with Fiona.
Sheila talks to Father Pete, who hints that she may need to repent before ridding her home of spirits, and Frank is outraged to learn from Jody that Peggy left all of her money to Frank's brothers and not to him. Monica questions Ian about "the kid from the store" and urges him not to be ashamed of sexuality, and as Lip assists Steve with some stolen voicemails, he eavesdrops on Estefania's phone conversation and learns that she is cheating on Steve. Lip is frustrated to see Monica spending time with the rest of the family at the football game, and Sheila and Jody give in to their attraction as they attempt to "smudge" her home. Karen advises Lip not to get involved with Steve's marital problems and then interviews a prospective adoption couple, clearly only interested in their wealth. Fiona asks Steve to kick Lip out of his home and force him back to school, and Steve is upset to learn from Lip that his wife is cheating on him despite the fact that he himself still loves Fiona. Monica takes an uncomfortable Ian to a gay nightclub, where he admits that Mickey's incarceration is his fault, and when Debbie offers some kind words about Grammy Gallagher at an impromptu family party, Frank seems to realize his genuine sadness at her death. In the morning, Monica brings home Peggy's ashes and Frank gives her a uniquely Gallagher send-off, but Terry then bursts into the house and attacks Ian, angrily revealing that Mandy is pregnant and believing him to be the father.
