
JUSTICE LEAGUE: LEGENDS {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
One in this animated television series about a group of superheroes working to defend the world against colossal threats.
Hawkgirl tells Green Lantern about her discovery of the graves, but he refuses to believe her assertion that the real Justice Guild is dead. The Injustice Guild argues over who won their wager, but Dr. Blizzard wins when he presents them with the captured Flash and Black Siren, and he enacts his scheme. Soon the Justice Guild receives word that the Injustice Guild has robbed the Seaboard City Mint and are escaping in a blimp. Meanwhile, Hawkgirl finds Green Lantern visiting the graves of the Justice Guild, although he is still having difficulty making sense of it. They stop a passing ice cream truck and try to talk to the driver, but he behaves oddly around them. Green Lantern suspiciously notes that he never seems to stop, and the driver tells him to stop asking questions or “he might hear you.” He drives away without explaining himself. Meanwhile, J’onn and the Justice Guild rush to intercept the blimp and find that Black Siren and the Flash have been tied to its exterior. The Justice Guild battles against the Injustice Guild until Cat Man manages to infiltrate the blimp and fight the villains up close.
Green Lantern and Hawkgirl visit the local library, but find that every book is filled with blank pages. In the basement they discover the ruined remnants of a subway station, clearly destroyed in some sort of armed conflict. There, Green Lantern discovers a newspaper with a headline about an imminent international war with a date matching that of the last Justice Guild comic book issue forty years ago. The fight against the Injustice Guild continues as the Flash uses his costume’s headwear to puncture a hole in the blimp’s outer structure, causing it to leak and slowly descend. Tom Turbine saves the Flash and Black Siren as the Injustice Guild is defeated and arrested.
Eventually everyone reconvenes at the Justice Guild headquarters, and Green Lantern and Hawkgirl accuse the Justice Guild of not being who they say they are. He presents the newspaper he found, with a headline claiming that the Justice Guild were killed in a massive battle. Before they can contemplate this latest development, a giant robot arrives and attacks the city. Green Lantern prevents the Justice Guild from leaving to fight it, pointing out that their world is nonsensical and that crises emerge whenever anyone comes too close to discovering the truth. Green Lantern posits that their world is an elaborate “illusion” to conceal a world destroyed forty years ago after the Justice Guild perished. J’onn identifies the source of the illusion: Ray, who he reveals as a bizarre mutant with an oversized head and powerful psionic abilities. Ray, furious that the Justice League “ruined everything,” attacks them, and the Justice Guild defend their headquarters from the attacking giant robot.
The Justice League attempts to fight Ray, but his powers quickly overwhelm them. The Justice Guild realize that the Justice League needs their help, but Tom Turbine points out that defeating Ray could wipe out their reality and end their lives. They decide that they have already sacrificed themselves to save the world and can do so again. They combine forces and attack Ray, who collapses from the strain of attempting to fend them off. At that moment the world reverts to its true form, that of a ruined post-apocalyptic wasteland. Green Lantern watches as the Justice Guild vanish in a flash of light. J’onn explains that the radioactive fallout from the nuclear war which devastated this world mutated Ray, allowing him to use his powers to recreate a world populated with his childhood heroes. The Justice League discovers that the civilians of Seaboard City are all real people, and were forced to play along with the illusion for decades. They assure them that after such an ordeal, they will have little difficulty rebuilding their world. Green Lantern finds Tom Turbine’s trans-dimensional gateway and uses his ring to give it enough power to send the Justice League back to their home dimension. Back on the Watchtower, Green Lantern and Hawkgirl reflect on the Justice Guild’s sacrifice. Commercials deleted.
