ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: IMAGINARY ENEMIES (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy-drama series, based on the memoir by Piper Kerman, about a preppy young woman's experience in a women's prison. In this episode, Piper attempts to clean up the mess left by Suzanne, observed by a frustrated Miss Claudette. In a flashback, a nervous young Miss Claudette is brought by her older friend Baptiste to America to work as a maid to pay off her parents' debt. Tricia attempts to sweet-talk Miss Claudette into baking a cake for her girlfriend Mercy's release party, while elsewhere Piper is assigned to the electrical workshop, overseen by the apathetic and lazy Luschek, who instructs her to rewire a lamp despite having no experience in the field. Mercy gives away her belongings and exchanges heated words with Big Boo, her ex, and Red tells Lorna that Boo may cause a fight in order to get Mercy's sentence extended out of bitterness. Piper bonds with Nicky over lunch, and Healy tells Miss Claudette that her case may be reopened, though she is uninterested, having been disappointed repeatedly in the past.
In the past, an adult Claudette has become the new head of the immigrant maid service and instructs her girls to be tidy and polite. She is thrilled when Baptiste pays her a visit, though less so when she meets his attractive younger wife, Josephine. Bennett and Daya flirt over his secret chewing tobacco habit while out in the yard, and Luschek is outraged when a screwdriver goes missing and argues heatedly with Janae, whom he placed in charge of monitoring the tool shop. Caputo informs the women that hiding a deadly weapon means five extra years on their sentence, and Janae is hauled off to SHU when she fights back against the accusation. Pornstache gropes Piper as the women are searched, and Piper is stunned to realize that she accidentally pocketed the screwdriver before lunch. Though Pornstache makes a mess of their cube during a sweep, he misses the hidden tool and Claudette firmly tells Piper to return it to the workshop or face serious consequences. As the inmates decorate for Mercy's party, Big Boo taunts Tricia, telling her that Mercy will surely dump her as soon as she is released. Piper attempts to return the screwdriver undetected, but she is spotted by Suzanne and narrowly avoids a random pat-down by talking to Healy.
Tricia requests Piper's help in writing her letter of appeal, and several other women soon follow suit, sure that her education will help to get them released. In the library, Nicky questions Alex about her mysterious past with Piper, and Alex grows emotional as she admits that she had "grand plans" for her life before prison. Claudette advises Piper that it is unfair to give the other women hope with the letters, and Piper finds that the screwdriver has gone missing from her bed. When Claudette lectures her about it, Piper angrily demands to be cut some "slack," citing her difficult experience in prison so far., Taystee recites a poem at Mercy's party and Mercy promises Tricia that she will wait for her, and Nicky assures a worried Piper that Alex has not shared much about her and that Claudette will likely not harm her, as she is in prison for illegal slave trade, not murder, as rumored. In the past, however, one of Claudette's girls reveals that a client has abused her and Claudette kills the man in retaliation, tidying up the crime scene as she goes. Claudette then catches Tricia attempting to plant drugs to insure Mercy's continued imprisonment and tells her that "love is not an excuse" for such a trick. A desperate Luschek secretly purchases a new screwdriver and replaces it, though Big Boo is revealed to have stolen the old one for "personal use." Claudette receives a letter from Baptiste revealing that Josephine has died and he is returning to America, and she tells Healy that she has changed her mind about reopening her case. Later, Mercy departs the prison, bidding a sad farewell to Tricia and the others.
