NCIS: CRESCENT CITY, PART 2 (TV)

Summary

One in this drama series about a Washington D.C.-based team of special agents from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. This two-part episode serves as a back-door pilot for a spinoff series set in New Orleans. In this episode, Brody's enjoyable Big Easy breakfast is interrupted by the news that another body possibly linked to Victor Lorta, the deceased Privilege Killer has been found in the wetlands. Elsewhere, LaSalle intervenes in an early-morning robbery at a bar, and the agents examine the badly-damaged body and determine that Lorta's copycat is likely the culprit. Back in DC, Tony is unnerved to receive a voodoo doll, "Little Tony," in the mail, and Vance and Fornell enlists the help of Dr. Mallard in studying the hundreds of letters sent to Lorta in prison, guessing that the copycat was part of his "fanbase." The agents determine that the wetlands victim does not fit the usual profile and was therefore possibly killed because he witnessed the killer in action, and Wendell reveals that the perpetrator was wearing an old military jacket at the time, playing "dress-up" to get into character. A savvy young boy informs the agents that he spotted a man in a white uniform jacket around the time of the death, and Mallard finds that one of Lorta's fans also wrote to a Joseph Hanlon, who made significant donations to Congressman McClane's campaign.

Tony and McGee visit Hanlon, who explains that the letter came from an Emile Titus and that he reported it to the police. Mallard notes that Lorta maintained his innocence in all of his response letters and also claims to have been set up by McClane, suggesting that the "copycat" is the real Privilege Killer and has been at large all along. Pride reacts angrily, as McClane was his longtime boss and friend, but Gibbs is less sure and suggests talking to their other former colleague, Felix Betts. Tony suffers a migraine and believes the voodoo doll is to blame, and the agents investigate Titus, who seems to have been obsessed with the case and may be the true culprit. Pride and Gibbs try to question Betts about whether McClane may have taken a bribe, but soon realize that their old friend is senile and cannot remember. Wendell tells them that jet fuel was found in the tire tracks at the murder scene, further suggesting Titus' guilt, and Pride questions Brody about her experience witnessing the bomb detonation. When they storm Titus' home, however, they find him dead, and Wade declares it to be murder staged to look like a suicide, presumably by the real killer.

Pride is upset to learn that McClane did indeed accept bribes to frame Lorta as the Privilege Killer, and when they discover that Hanlon was his biggest donor, they realize that Hanlon's son Spencer fits the profile and that his father has been protecting him. Unaware of this, McGee tells Hanlon about McClane and Hanlon quickly attacks him, and the agents hurriedly track down Spence and find McGee injured but alive. They then discover that Hanlon has overdosed on pills, but not before warning Spencer that he has been discovered, and they guess that he will soon kill again and begin searching nearby military bars. Spencer leaves a bar with an attractive woman and then overpowers her, but the agents find him in a graveyard and gun him down when he attempts to kill her. The case solved, the agents prepare to head back to D.C., though LaSalle and Pride suggest that Brody should stay long-term and she agrees, having taken a liking to the city. Gibbs and Pride spend one last afternoon with their friend Betts, and Gibbs then departs Louisiana. Commercials deleted.
