2008 AMERICAN LATINO MEDIA ARTS AWARDS, THE (TV)
Summary
The television broadcast of the 2008 NCLR American Latino Media Arts (ALMA) awards, honoring the contributions of American Latino men and women in music, television, and film. This year's awards are hosted by actress Eva Longoria Parker and are held at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Parker opens the evening by commenting on the recent Writers Guild of America strike and joking about her own dramatic hijinks on her show "Desperate Housewives."
Actor Cristián de la Fuente and racecar driver Hélio Castroneves present the first award for Outstanding Male Performance in a Comedy Television Series, which goes to Charlie Sheen for "Two and a Half Men." Next, Ryan Seacrest presents "Ugly Betty" star America Ferrera with the Chevy Entertainer of the Year Award. The Cheetah Girls perform "One World," and "Battlestar Galactica" star Edward James Olmos presents singer Shakira with a special humanitarian award for her work in promoting quality education for children in her native Colombia. During her speech, Shakira invites fellow humanitarian Pamela Jimenez Cardenas onto the stage to share the award.
Actors Kate del Castillo and Oscar Nuñez introduces Lisa Lisa and Mario, who perform the song "All Cried Out." Terrence Howard and Angélica Vale then take the stage to present the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Television Series, which goes to Jorge Garcia from "Lost." Selena Gomez, Jake Austin and David Henrie, stars of the kids' show "The Wizards of Waverly Place," introduce "Dancing With the Stars" alumni Cheryl Burke, Kym Johnson, A.B. Quintanilla and the Kumbia All-Starz, who perform "Rica y Apretadita." Next, singer Placido Domingo introduces a special tribute and Trailblazer Award to musician Linda Ronstadt, featuring a series of clips detailing her long career and performances from Wynonna Judd, who sings "Blue Bayou," Eden Espinosa and Bebe Winans, who sing "Don't Know Much," and Lucero and the Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano, who perform "Los Laureles." Ronstadt takes the stage to accept her award, explaining that she had to fight with her label to record and perform a Spanish-language album honoring her father's heritage, noting her gratitude that it was ultimately well-received by the Latino community.
Comedian Carlos Mencia then introduces legendary comedy duo Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin, who joke about their plans to run for president and vice-president before announcing that they are going on tour for the first time in decades. Next, Jessica Alba presents Narcisco Rodriguez with a special award for his achievements in the fashion world, and some of his latest designs are showcased in a brief fashion show. Janet Murguia, president of the National Council of La Raza, a national Latino advocacy program, takes the stage and comments briefly on the importance of diversity and representation in media, then urging the audience and viewers to vote in the upcoming 2008 Presidential election. Singer and choreographer Paula Abdul introduces Brian McKnight and Jon Secada, who perform a bilingual version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," after which Ashley Tisdale and Zac Efron, stars of the "High School Musical" series, honor Kenny Ortega with the award for Outstanding Director of a Made-for-TV Movie for "High School Musical 2." Actors Enrique Murciano, Adam Rodríguez and Danny Pino present the award for Outstanding Performance of a Latino-Led Ensemble in a Television Series to the cast of "Ugly Betty," and Ferrera and co-stars Mark Indelicato, Ana Ortiz and Tony Plana take the stage to accept the award.
