BODY OF PROOF: COMMITTED (TV)

Summary

One in this dramatic series about compassionate Philadelphia-based medical examiner Megan Hunt and her team.

In this episode, a patient at a girls' psychiatric hospital, Renee Caldwell, is found murdered in the bathroom, and lack of evidence of a break-in points to an employee or fellow patient as the culprit. Tommy and Megan question several of the girls; Darby Stone claims that she saw the killer sneaking in through the air vent – and that she was the real target. At the same time, when Megan's mother refuses to sign off on an exhumation notice despite Megan's protests that her father's so-called suicide note contained another person's fingerprint, she turns to former CDC Dr. Charlie Stafford for help. An unknown jelly-like substance is found on Renee's body, and further research reveals that Darby's younger sister Beth was murdered two years ago, apparently by an intruder. Megan is furious when Dr. Derrick Malcolm, head of the hospital, heavily sedates Darby to prevent their questioning her further. Tommy wonders if Megan is overreacting because of her relationship with her own teen daughter.

Damage to the air vent seems to support Darby's story, and after obtaining a court order, Megan is told by Darby that her own mother, Julia, actually murdered Beth and forced her to lie, then committed her to the hospital to maintain the secret. Elsewhere, Riley asks Megan about her relationship with Tommy, hinting that she is interested in him; Megan tells her to "do whatever she wants." When questioned, Julia strongly denies her daughter's claims, protesting that Darby is mentally unwell. Meanwhile, Dr. Malcolm prepares to administer electroshock therapy – knowing that it might damage her memory – but Darby attacks him and escapes the hospital. An annoyed Kate informs Megan that Dr. Malcolm has filed a complaint against her, and Megan is surprised to learn that Darby has sought refuge in her home and has apparently befriended Lacey. Megan admits to Tommy that she sees herself, not Lacey, in Darby, as she too has been ignored and silenced about a tragedy; Darby describes in great detail how Julia murdered Beth.

Ethan finds traces of Beth's blood in the pearl necklace Julia was wearing on the night in question, but when they try to force a confession from her, Julia explains that Darby is the true murderer and that she has been covering up for her daughter by inventing the story of an intruder. Megan refuses to believe the tale and whisks Darby off to her aunt's home; further investigation then reveals that the substance on Renee's body and the vent is an Ibuprofen ointment that Darby had requested at the hospital, implying that she is the true killer after all. Tommy calls Megan to warn her, and Darby jumps from the car and frantically tells a passing cop that Megan has kidnapped her. Megan manages to overpower her and hauls her back to the police station. Darby coldly admits to both murders, gloating that she manipulated the police and medical examiners with her sad stories. Megan and Dr. Malcolm agree that they both underestimated her cunning. Megan begins to doubt her other "hunches," like her speculation about her father's possible murder. When Tommy tries to reassure her, she sadly ends their budding romance by suggesting that they "put the past to rest." Includes commercials and promos.
