PRIVATE PRACTICE: IN WHICH WE SAY GOODBYE {SERIES FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The series finale in this medical drama series spun off from “Grey’s Anatomy” that chronicles the lives of Dr. Addison Montgomery and her friends and fellow doctors at Oceanside Wellness Group in Los Angeles. In this episode, Addison records a wedding-day message and reflects on her not-so-perfect first marriage to Derek Shepherd. Addison and Jake's ceremony is a success, happily attended by all of their friends and family. Violet declares that she is writing another book, and Sam and Naomi's polite reunion quickly turns romantic. Three months later, Violet talks with her long-term patient Holly and tells her that she is finally ready to quit therapy and move on from an earlier trauma, and Miranda suffers a seizure as her cancer worsens. A profoundly frazzled Cooper admits to Violet that he is struggling with his role as stay-at-home dad to the triplets, and she advises him to talk to Charlotte. Naomi visits Addison again and reveals that she is pregnant, but confesses that she and Fife are no longer living together. When Naomi asks, Addison explains that she and Sam broke up because of his disinterest in having children with her.
Jake is upset to learn that Angela is taking a semester off to be with her much-older professor boyfriend, Eli. Holly reveals that she was accepted at a prestigious cooking school in Paris but is afraid to be away from Violet, sure that she is not ready to stop therapy. Addison observes Sam and Naomi's awkward interaction and realizes that he is the father of her baby, but Naomi says that she cannot tell him the truth, as he does not want more children and is still dating Stephanie. Addison confides in Jake, who advises her against getting involved, but Addison informs Sam that he has always been in love with Naomi and adds that she is no longer with Fife. Miranda decides to leave the hospital against medical advice and shocks Sheldon by telling him to walk away from her, not wanting him to witness the "indignities" of her death. A panicked Cooper finally tells Charlotte that he wants to hire a nanny, and Sam ends things with Stephanie, admitting that he is "a mess," though she seems to realize the true meaning of the breakup. Violet firmly tells Holly that she is "in a good place" and no longer needs her, and when Jake asks Sheldon for advice about Angela, Sheldon has an epiphany about love and abruptly quits the practice. He confronts Miranda and declares that he is staying with her no matter what, determined to make the most of their limited time together.
Violet bids farewell to a grateful Holly as she heads off to Paris, and Jake gives Angela his blessing, assuring her that she will always be "his girl." Sam barges into Naomi's office and declares his eternal love for her, and she protests that he merely feels "trapped," but is stunned to learn that he was unaware of her pregnancy and that his intentions are genuine. Addison finishes her video message, revealed to be a recording for Naomi and Sam's re-wedding, and Violet reveals that she has finished her new book "about joy and life," though all of her friends express dislike of the title: "Private Practice."
