PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2014: PRETTY LITTLE LIARS {LONG VERSION}
Summary
One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media’s 31st William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television’s creative community. This PALEYFEST 2014 seminar honors “Pretty Little Liars,” the drama-thriller series about the mysterious lives of a clique of young women in Rosewood, Pennsylvania, loosely based on the books by Sara Shepard. Maureen Reidy (chief marketing officer, The Paley Center for Media) offers opening remarks before introducing the evening’s moderator, Damian Holbrook (senior writer, TV Guide).
Holbrook moderates the following panelists: executive producers Joseph Dougherty, Oliver Goldstick, and I. Marlene King; and cast members Keegan Allen (Toby Cavanaugh), Janel Parrish (Mona Vanderwaal), Ian Harding (Ezra Fitz), Sasha Pieterse (Alison DiLaurentis), Shay Mitchell (Emily Fields), Lucy Hale (Aria Montgomery), Ashley Benson (Hanna Marin), and Troian Bellisario (Spencer Hastings).
The panelists touch on such topics as: social media's pivotal role in turning the show into a sensation; how the cast relates to the less-than-flattering aspects of their complex characters; the on-set camaraderie among the lead actresses; how Bellisario's audition turned into an accidental strip-tease; plans to develop the characters' relationships in the show’s fifth season; an increased role for returning actor Tyler Blackburn (Caleb Rivers); Allen's feelings on his countless number of shirtless scenes; Mitchell being "thrilled" by the ways in which her gay character might help those struggling with sexual identity; the wildly differing styles of Dougherty, Goldstick, and King when directing an episode; the physical pain endured by the actresses when taking part in "event episodes" like a masked ball; Harding's talent for creating sound effects on-set; if producers would consider doing a musical episode; whether cast members find themselves confused by the labyrinthian plots; and the possibility of a “Pretty Little Liars” movie after the series concludes.
Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the cast's discomfort when continually asked to make love scenes more intense; what goes into choosing the show’s fashion-conscious wardrobe; ways of coping with 18-hour "emotionally draining" days; Pieterse's proclivity for doing her own stunts; the producers’ debunking of several cryptic references thought to be clues to the central mystery; adherence to the novels upon which “Pretty Little Liars” is based; the failure of the show's spin-off series “Ravenswood”; and the twentysomething actresses' feelings on playing characters that are years younger.
Includes a clip reel of selected highlights from the show.
