Summary
Continued from ACCNUM 113801. The tenth season premiere in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In the second half of this two-part episode, as Alex and Cristina marvel at Richard's decision to name Meredith his medical power of attorney, Catherine Avery storms into the hospital and demands that Bailey halt his dangerous operation at once. Brooks dies on the table despite Derek's best efforts, and Owen gives the interns the rest of the day off to mourn their friend. Arizona is shocked when a furious Callie vanishes with Sofia, and Catherine fights with Owen and Bailey about Richard's treatment as the interns anxiously await the arrival of Brooks' mother. Meredith urges Callie to stay at her house rather than at a hotel, and Bailey wonders if she is "too close" to Richard to make the right decisions. Cristina and Owen find themselves unable to resist a "final" romantic encounter or two, and Cristina tearfully admits that their breakup, while seemingly inevitable, is "not easy."
Jackson tells EMT Sasha that her organs are beginning to fail because of her necrotizing fasciitis, and she and Brian decide to marry on the spot. Meredith ignores Cristina's doubts and tells a panicked Arizona of Callie and Sofia's whereabouts, and the interns realize that none of them were particularly close to Brooks as they struggle to come up with some appropriate anecdotes to tell her mother. Jackson desperately searches for a chaplain for Sasha and Brian as Catherine declares her intentions to move Richard to another hospital, though Bailey wants to continue operating and searching for a hidden problem. At Alex's prodding, Jo finally bonds with her fellow interns, apart from a still-silent Ross, as they swap secrets about their lives, and Mrs. Brooks arrives at an inopportune moment. Jackson gets ordained online and performs the marriage ceremony, and Bailey, performing an exploratory laparotomy, discovers that she was right and quickly fixes a problem with Richard's pancreas.
April tries to apologize about her impulsive request, but Jackson, struck by Sasha and Brian's devotion to one another, coldly tells her that her sense of indecision between himself and Matthew is "entirely about her" and not based on true commitment. Edwards tries to reassure Lydia, whose house was indeed destroyed in the mudslide, that she can start a new life elsewhere, though Lydia seems committed to her lonely life on the side of the mountain. The interns end up borrowing Meredith's funny story about George as they attempt to comfort Brooks' heartbroken mother, and April manages to convince Matthew of her true desire for him as she formally accepts his grand proposal. Bailey struggles to tell Ben about Richard's perilous situation, and Ross appears to have a significant change of heart as he watches the firemen tirelessly helping the storm victims. Still thinking of Lydia's isolation, Edwards orders the other interns to support him as he heads out in the ambulance to assist more people. A distraught Arizona begs for a few minutes with Sofia when Callie sternly informs her that they will trade off custody of their daughter every two nights, and Meredith is forced to pull rank when Catherine again demands to move Richard – who then awakens in their midst.
