MODERN FAMILY: FIRST DAYS {FIFTH SEASON PREMIERE} {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
The fifth season premiere in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In the second half of this two-part episode, Claire heads to her first day of work at Jay's company as the kids head off to school, though Gloria and Phil are disappointed when their new high-schoolers refuse to let their parents walk them inside. Claire's awkward attempts to befriend her new colleagues fall embarrassingly flat, and Cameron, working as a substitute teacher, is flustered when he is asked to cover an AP History class. Gloria and Phil stumble into a commercial shoot and are asked to be background extras, and Alex is highly embarrassed when her flamboyant uncle arrives in her class dressed as George Washington and spouting only semi-accurate information. Mitchell's laissez-faire boss Charlie Bingham arrives for a brief meeting, and he immediately takes an inappropriate liking to Haley when she stops by to pick up Lily. Jay warns Claire not to hang out with Todd, the "office weirdo" whom he intends to fire, and Gloria and Phil steal the spotlight in the commercial with their over-the-top miming.
Alex sternly informs Cam that she needs top grades to get into her dream college and cannot accept a substandard teacher, and a guilty Claire warns Todd away from making any big financial decisions any time soon. Phil and Gloria are both overcome with emotion as they realize that their children are ready to move on from them, and Mitch finally blows up at his boss for his childish "midlife crisis" and is relieved when Charlie is impressed by his candor. Cam tells Principal Brown that he is not cut out for teaching history, but he quickly realizes that his talents are needed on the football field instead and immediately takes over coaching the team, still dressed as the first President. Jay is exasperated when Todd, having learned of his impending firing from Claire, takes his revenge on the company, but Cam gives an inspiring speech to the team about "forging a new path," and the parents are glad to learn of their kids' successful first days back. Includes commercials and promos.
