BOSTON LEGAL: JUICED (TV)

Summary

One in this darkly comic series focusing on a firm of brilliant but emotionally-challenged attorneys in Boston. In this episode, Carl is bewildered when Catherine Piper, claiming that "older sister" Shirley has hired her, declares herself his new assistant. Denny undergoes neurological testing and learns that he's officially experiencing the early stages of Alzheimer's, and teenager Margie Coggins seeks Katie and Jerry's help in being reinstated to Harvard University, explaining that her acceptance was rescinded after she admitted to "academic doping," or using non-prescribed cognition-enhancing drugs while studying. Jerry, who also uses drugs to manage the effects of his Asperger's syndrome, sides with Margie, though Alan notes that Americans are notoriously over-medicated. Denny learns about a newly created Russian Alzheimer's drug, and when Catherine finally admits that she's simply "old and bored," she and Carl get the idea to sue the television networks for ignoring older demographics.

Margie argues that many people use unprescribed drugs like Ritalin to improve academic performance, and the Harvard representative admits that they don't yet have a formal rule banning such practices. Denny learns that he can't take the Russian drug, as it's not FDA approved, and admits that he enjoys his moments of delusion in which he believes himself to still be dating Shirley. Jerry tells Katie that drugs can help level the academic playing field that normally gives unfair advantages to wealthy, neurotypical students, and Carl makes a passionate argument about how Baby Boomers are ignored in advertising and media programming despite making significant financial contributions to the market. Alan tries to support Denny by arguing in court that a patient should be allowed to try untested drugs if they accept the risks, and Judge Peyton agrees to let the Massachusetts Supreme Court decide the matter. Catherine "shocks" Judge Brown with her flirtatious persuasions, though Carl opts for a more reasonable point of view.

Jerry argues that students like Margie are under extreme pressure to perform in school, adding that she was honest about her technically permissible drug use, and when the Supreme Court rejects Denny's case, he suggests heading straight to Russia with Alan after Shirley and Carl's wedding, where he will give away the bride. Judge Reese sides with Harvard and refuses to order Margie's reinstatement, but Jerry assures her that self-acceptance comes only from within. Judge Brown agrees with Carl and Catherine's points about ageism, and Carl thanks Denny for being a "good sport" about the wedding, though they are interrupted by an ecstatic Alan, who reveals that they're headed to the Supreme Court after all. Jerry is thrilled when Katie invites him on what seems to be a date, and Denny finally considers retirement, though he tells Alan that he "loves life" and will not accept a premature death.
