GREY'S ANATOMY: WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic medical series about the lives and loves of a group of surgeons at a Seattle hospital. In this episode, Meredith struggles to open up to her shrink, Dr. Wyatt, while George and Lexie attempt to improve their dismal basement apartment. Richard notices the interns' obsessive contest, in which they receive varying number of "points" for their medical accomplishments, and Mark wonders about Derek and Rose's slow-going relationship as Cristina notices Callie's budding friendship with her would-be mentor Hahn. Izzie meets patient Otis Sharon and resolves to find a "medical mystery" behind his uninteresting twisted ankle, while the other interns handle a much more dramatic case: a trio of campers mauled by a bear. Phillip, who blames himself for causing his brother Scott's grievous injuries by antagonizing the bear cub, reveals that he recently "married his rebound girl," Jennifer, who belatedly discovers her own serious scalp damage.
Alex and Cristina fight over Scott's time-consuming surgery, as sutures are worth one point each, and Otis grows alarmed as Izzie performs a battery of tests for his very minor symptoms. Cristina begs Callie to "put in a good word" for her as George, aware that Meredith wants an excuse to hang around Derek, agrees to take over Jennifer's treatment. Lexie pilfers a variety of small items from the hospital to spruce up her apartment, and Meredith overhears when Rose blurts out her extreme attraction to Derek to an uncomfortable Lexie. Scott tries to reassure a worried Phillip, joking that he "married his midlife crisis," and Meredith begins to wonder if Phillip has a neurological problem that is causing his impulsive behavior, like quickie marriages and bear-poking. Bailey confronts Izzie about her treatment of Otis, and Cristina, though she is handily beating Alex in the suture contest, abandons her chances and accepts a chance to watch Hahn's procedure instead.
Izzie, still feverishly searching for her "mystery," admits to George that she no longer trusts her own instincts, and Richard observes Alex's "scrappy underdog" tendencies. Scott soon dies on the table despite their best efforts, and when Meredith breaks the news that he does in fact have an inoperable, behavior-changing brain tumor, he declares it to be his fitting punishment for causing his brother's death. Heartbroken, Jennifer wonders if she is merely a "symptom" of his problem, rather than his true love, and Otis loses his temper when Izzie timidly admits that he has nothing more than a mere flu. Meredith wins the contest because of the tumor mystery and receives the "sparkle pager," entitling her to steal any of her friends' surgeries for three months, and Derek speculates that Mark's endless questions about Rose are rooted in his own sexual frustration. Richard comforts Izzie, revealing that he too participated in "the contest" back in his own intern days, and Cristina returns home to find roomie Callie socializing with Hahn yet again. George is touched to see the results of Lexie's magpie-like "nesting" habits, and Meredith puts aside her concerns about Rose and asks Derek to join her on a clinical trial for patients suffering from complicated tumors like Phillip's.
