WONDERFUL WORLD OF DISNEY, THE: CAMP ROCK (TV)

Summary

One in this series of family programs, presented under the umbrella title of "The Wonderful World of Disney," hosted by The Jonas Brothers. This made-for-television movie focuses on a teenage girl’s experiences at a summer camp for aspiring musicians.

On the last day of school before summer (“Who Will I Be”), Mitchie Torres, an aspiring songwriter, notices an entertainment news story about Shane Gray, an infamously temperamental pop star, storming off the set of his band Connect Three’s latest music video, thus cancelling their summer tour. Mitchie tries to cajole her mother into sending her to “Camp Rock,” a summer music program, but she cannot afford to do so. Mitchie is unhappy at this development until she learns that her parents have decided to take their catering business to Camp Rock, thus allowing her the chance to attend, although she will also have to help them work in the camp kitchen. They arrive and get settled in, and are greeted by the camp’s director, Brown Cesario. While looking around Mitchie accidentally collides with Tess Tyler, a girl from a wealthy family characterized as the “diva of Camp Rock,” daughter of a multi-Grammy Award-winning musical artist. She also befriends another girl named Caitlyn, who has dreams of becoming a music producer. An assembly is called by Dee La Duke, the camp’s musical director, who introduces the camp’s program and announces that Shane will be the camp’s celebrity guest instructor that year.

However, Shane is disinterested in appearing at Camp Rock, believing that it would be a waste of time. The other two members of Connect Three, Jason and Nate, try to convince him to change his mind, reminding him that they all met at Camp Rock only three years ago, and that Cesario is their uncle. They also point out that the label is displeased with him over his recent actions, and that appearing at the camp would be good for his public image. He reluctantly agrees, only to find out that his bandmates have also signed him to perform a duet with the winner of the camp’s last performance, the “Final Jam.” There is an open mic night scheduled that night, but Mitchie feels nervous about performing; she overhears Tess and her friends rehearsing and Tess berating them. Shane is forced to flee when chased by screaming fangirls at the camp, and while hiding he overhears Mitchie practicing one of her songs on a piano (“This is Me”) but misses her before he can introduce himself.

Mitchie attends the open mic night, and meets Caitlyn’s friend Lola, who gets up to sing (“What it Takes”). Tess comes up to Caitlyn and Mitchie and acts snobbishly towards them. Mitchie tries to impress Tess and her friends by lying about her mom’s career, claiming that she is the overseas president of an entertainment channel. Tess invites Mitchie to share their cabin, and she enthusiastically accepts. In private Tess tries to get in touch with her mother, but she is too busy to talk to her. Mitchie arrives and Tess and her friends talk with her as Mitchie continues to spin elaborate lies about herself. They notice her book of songs that she wrote and ask to hear one. Mitchie gives them a sample, and they approve of it despite Mitchie insisting that it is not good. The next morning Mitchie sneaks out of the cabin early to go help her mother, still trying to conceal her true non-celebrity identity from her new friends. At breakfast, Tess insists that Mitchie sit with her, although Caitlyn warns her not to associate with Tess.

At her first class, Mitchie is singled out by Cesario because of her reluctance to sing in front of everyone. He encourages her to project and tries to get her to shed her shyness, and compliments her when she sings one of her songs. Later, Tess tells Mitchie that she should sing backup with her and her friends for Final Jam, although Mitchie would prefer to sing solo. However, Tess gets Mitchie to second-guess herself and she agrees to join their group. While cleaning up the kitchen for her mom, Mitchie encounters Shane, who happens to wander in. Embarrassed, she fashions a disguise in order to speak to him. He is there to complain about a mix-up involving his food allergy list, and Mitchie points out that his behavior is rather rude before he leaves. Cesario becomes frustrated that Shane keeps shirking his responsibilities, and sends him to teach a hip-hop dance class. Mitchie, Tess, and her group are in attendance at that class and prepare for Shane’s arrival. Shane shows up and leads the campers in a dance session (“Start the Party”) until one camper accidentally trips. His specialty lies in percussion, and Shane notes that they will have to use his predilection for rhythm to enhance his dance skills.

Mitchie’s cover is nearly blown when her mother attempts to speak to her in front of Tess, and she pretends that she doesn’t know her. Later, she talks to Mitchie about her new friends, noting that Tess doesn’t seem like her usual type. At a campwide bonfire event, Mitchie performs backup along with Tess and her friends (“Too Cool”), although she does not seem enthusiastic about it. The next day, Mitchie sees Shane practicing his guitar by the lake, and they talk about his change in musical style; he is frustrated since he feels he only plays “what the label thinks will sell.” Mitchie leaves, but encourages him to try to explore his own sound more thoroughly. Tess and Caitlyn have an altercation in the camp cafeteria with Mitchie caught in the middle, which escalates into a food fight until Cesario stops it and pulls all three of them into his office. As punishment, Caitlyn is put on kitchen duty for the rest of the summer. Mitchie panics, but says nothing so as not to blow her cover in front of Tess, much to Caitlyn’s disappointment.

Later Mitchie is transporting food for her mother when she runs into Shane again. He asks her to listen as he plays her a song he is working on (“Gotta Find You”). Mitchie is impressed by his work; he notes that he was inspired by overhearing a girl singing soon after his arrival at camp, although he still does not realize that it was Mitchie. Mitchie returns to the kitchen but tries to conceal her identity from Caitlyn, who has just arrived to help. However, she fails and ends up creating a huge mess. Caitlyn asks her why she created such an elaborate deception about her identity, and Mitchie claims that she simply wanted to “fit in.” Mitchie also accuses Caitlyn of being deceptive as well by affecting an apathetic attitude. Mitchie continues to conceal her identity from Tess and her friends, although Caitlyn seems to be waiting for an opportunity to expose her. That night, at the camp’s “pajama jam,” Mitchie tries to speak to Caitlyn, but Caitlyn rebuffs her. During Caitlyn’s performance, Tess creates a scene by claiming that a snake has entered the cabin, causing a minor panic. Caitlyn gets into an argument with Tess over this incident and Mitchie has a change of heart and makes fun of Tess, which seems to change Caitlyn’s opinion of her.

Later she and Caitlyn come to an understanding and rekindle their friendship. Caitlyn explains that she was once friends with Tess, noting her propensity for narcissism. She points out that Tess’s domineering behavior has stunted Mitchie’s ability to speak her mind and stand up for herself, and Mitchie leaves to go rehearse with Tess. Shane has newfound enthusiasm about performing a duet with the winner of Final Jam, and is determined to discover the identity of the girl who inspired him (“Start the Party” reprise). Girls from all over the camp sing for him in the hopes of being recognized, but none of them fit the criteria; Mitchie does not “audition,” believing that Shane has never heard her sing before. Later she meets with him by the lake again as he’s writing lyrics. They row out to the middle of the lake in a canoe together and Mitchie points out that despite his “rock star image” he is a decent person. Tess sees them together and is quite jealous, and later she spies on Mitchie and Caitlyn as they talk to Mitchie’s mother, thus discovering Mitchie’s true identity.

At another camp event, Shane makes an onstage appearance with the other members of his band, and they sing a song for the campers (“Play My Music”). The camper’s positive reaction convinces Shane that he was correct in following Mitchie’s advice. He believes their label will not approve, however, and his bandmates try to convince him otherwise. Tess takes the opportunity to call Mitchie out on her deception in front of Shane, and Mitchie decides to admit the truth. Shane is outraged at this revelation and feels disillusioned with Mitchie, and storms off. The next day Cesario talks to Shane about it and sings a snippet of Mitchie’s song to him, noting that it is stuck in his head but he still cannot determine her identity. Tess eavesdrops on his conversation and realizes that Shane is looking for Mitchie. She secretly steals Mitchie’s song book in an attempt to sabotage her entry into the Final Jam. Mitchie soon finds that she is no longer welcome amongst the other campers, who resent her for lying to them. Shane gives his class advice about Final Jam, and takes the opportunity to throw Mitchie’s advice about self-image back in her face. Later Mitchie discusses the matter with her mother and says that she wanted to engineer a situation in which, for once, she could be considered popular, but her mother advises her to simply be herself.

The next day in the cafeteria, Mitchie stands up to Tess and calls her out for talking down to everyone. Tess throws her out of her group, and Mitchie and Caitlyn decide to form their own. In the days leading up to Final Jam, everyone does their best to prepare for their performances. The day before Final Jam, Tess brings Cesario into the kitchen and accuses Mitchie and Caitlyn of stealing her charm bracelet. They get into an argument and Cesario decides to look around for it. The bracelet is discovered in the kitchen, lending credence to Tess’s accusation. Cesario notes that he will be forced to ban them from the remainder of all camp activities until the end of Final Jam. Shane learns that the press is on hand to cover the Final Jam, and hopes that he will meet his mystery singer when she performs onstage. Mitchie regrets getting entangled in “Tess drama;” she and Caitlyn head to Final Jam after Mitchie realizes something about what Cesario said.

Final Jam begins as Tess and her friends rehearse backstage, and Tess continues to yell at them. They are fed up with her behavior and walk out on her. Cesario announces that Shane and Connect Three are to judge the competition. The competition begins (“Hasta La Vista”) and Tess goes out onstage (“2 Stars”), invigorated by seeing her mother in the audience. However, her enthusiasm fades when she notices her mother taking a phone call in the middle of her performance, and soon the entire thing comes to a halt and Tess runs offstage to cry. Margaret, one of Tess’s former backup singers, enters at the last minute and performs a song of her own (“Here I Am”). After her performance, Tess arrives backstage to congratulate her and apologize for her behavior. Cesario emerges to announce the official end of Final Jam while the judges go off to deliberate. Mitchie and Caitlyn enter and ask to perform since Final Jam is technically over; Cesario notes that this was his intention all along and allows them onstage for their performance (“This Is Me” reprise). Shane recognizes her voice and realizes that she was the girl he was looking for the entire time and he joins her in an impromptu duet.

Cesario announces that Margaret is the winner of Final Jam, leaving her overjoyed. Tess compliments Mitchie and Caitlyn, and reveals that she told Cesario that they didn’t take her charm bracelet. Mitchie’s parents come backstage to congratulate her, and Shane comes to talk to her as well and they reconcile their argument. The campers reunite for a massive jam session (“We Rock”).
