UGLY BETTY: THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy-drama series about Betty Suarez, a young Queens woman trying to make it in the fashion industry despite her unglamorous appearance.
In this episode, despite his bad cold, Ignacio joins Hilda and Justin in trying to cheer up a heartbroken Betty following the "clean break" she agreed upon with Henry. That afternoon, Gio kisses Betty when she's picking up sandwiches and asks if he is her "rebound guy." Courtesy of Amanda and Marc, a photo of the smooch get emailed around the office, after which a sympathetic Claire assigns a Hot Flash story to Betty about "the youth perspective." Meanwhile, Suzuki reports on Wilhelmina's return to Mode, representing the interests of Bradford's soon-to-be-born child. Alexis and Daniel make a pledge to fight Wilhelmina together, though that quickly erodes when Wilhelmina attends an editorial meeting and steals Daniel's thunder. She also tells Claire how to cover for the loss of advertisers at Hot Flash.
Later, Hilda goes to Justin's school to flirt with Tony, after which he asks her to help chaperone a student dance to be held that night. In Manhattan, Daniel determines to gain the high ground over Wilhelmina by going on Larry King's talk show, which turns disastrous after Marc disguises his voice on a call and asks a series of humiliating questions. At Mode, Amanda tells Marc about the father-and-daughter reality show that she'll be doing with Gene Simmons. When Marc asks if he can be part of it, Amanda turns him down. Regardless, Marc shows up at the show's taping, causing a fight with Amanda after she insults him. Hilda also has a bad night, realizing that she has caught Ignacio's cold and can't be a chaperone.
Betty opts to take Hilda's place, thinking she can talk to kids about "the youth perspective." Instead, the students ignore her and prove entranced by Gio, who was asked to be a chaperone since his niece is enrolled there. As Gio and Betty share their own dance, he instructs her on how to interact with the students. Upon wandering around the school's halls, Gio then volunteers to get one of Betty's old trophies from a glass case. When the glass shatters, Principal Hayward blames Betty and accuses her of stealing. Also at the dance, Justin verbally trashes the gym decorations, stating that "it's like putting lipstick on a pig." Regardless, he later approaches Tony to reveal Hilda's attraction to him.
Later, Amanda returns to Mode and apologizes to Marc for her behavior. She reveals that she didn't want Marc around because he'd realize that Gene was only fatherly to her when the cameras were rolling. Worse, Gene's Tweety Bird tattoo was faked to make Amanda believe that he was her dad, thus allowing him to star in the father-daughter reality show. Elsewhere at Mode, Daniel and Claire are shocked when Alexis reinstates Wilhelmina to her former position, noting that she excels at her job. Back in Queens, Tony brings soup to Hilda and the two make plans to get together when she's better. Betty also seeks a date after Gio walks her home from the school outing. However, Gio turns down Betty's request, stating that he doesn't want to be "the rebound guy"; he wants to be "the guy." Includes commercials.
