MODERN FAMILY: GOODNIGHT GRACIE {FOURTH SEASON FINALE} (TV)
Summary
The fourth season finale in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Phil's mother Grace dies and the rest of the family heads to Florida for the memorial service, though Gloria admits that she is a "wanted woman" in Florida because of a misunderstanding with a brothel and Mitchell agrees to represent her in court. Manny immediately takes a liking to the sedentary retirement village, as does Cam, who quickly bonds with some elderly women. In court, Mitch ends up assisting several other clients with their cases in front of the tough judge, and Phil is upset when he finds a letter from his mother instructing him to fix his father Frank up with a local woman, Annie. Luke, Haley and Alex also receive parting gifts from their grandmother, though Alex is taken aback when hers appears to be nothing more than an old lighter. Haley stands up to a bossy security guard who tries to prevent her from enjoying the pool, though Alex flees, and Cam unwittingly stirs up trouble in the group when he catches one of the women cheating at mah-jongg.
Jay recognizes one of Frank's neighbors, Charlotte, and realizes that she was his "first" right before he shipped out for Vietnam. When he talks to her, however, he finds that she provided the same "send-off" to many other young men. Alex finds that there is more to her grandmother's gift than she realized, and when Claire tricks Phil into visiting Annie, they find her with another man and Claire is forced to awkwardly cover the moment. Later, however, they find that the local women are indeed flocking around the newly-single Frank and hear from gossip-expert Cam that Annie's visitor was her brother. Phil visits her again and explains Grace's last request, though Annie ends up comforting him when he grows emotional over his mother's wacky-but-loving schemes. Mitchell successfully gets Gloria's case dismissed and decides that he wants to quit his job and return to the courtroom, and at the memorial service, Alex ignites some sparklers per Grace's instruction to "break the rules sometimes," explaining that her grandparents met when Grace stole the lighter from a certain celebrity. Later, Manny and Luke are disappointed to leave their relaxing new lives behind as they return to California. Includes commercials and promos.
