LAW & ORDER {LAW AND ORDER}: 3 DAWG NIGHT (TV)
Summary
One in this series of dramas that deals with the investigation, arrest, and prosecution of criminals. The first half of each episode concerns the police procedure that leads to the arrest of a suspect, while the second half covers the efforts of the district attorney to prosecute the case. In this episode, a young man is fatally shot at an upscale nightclub and the bouncer admits that he let him in as a personal favor. Examining his personal effects and apartment, Green and Briscoe discover that "Bone," as he was known, was an aspiring DJ, and his sister speculates that he may also have been selling drugs. The club manager, Lonnie, reveals that he witnessed Bone confronting a famous rap star, Darryl 'G Train' Collins, and loudly accusing him of being a "sell-out." The club's coat-check girl, Amanda, excitedly describes seeing Collins with his girlfriend, popular actress Allie Lawrence, confirming that Bone pursued the pair and made a scene, at which point Collins' bodyguard appeared to draw a gun. Collins, aided by his lawyer, states that he did not know Bone and walked away from the scene moments before the shooting started. Green and Briscoe discover that the bodyguard, Wilson, carries an unregistered firearm, but M.E. Borak soon finds gunshot residue on Wilson's sleeve, meaning that he was likely standing right beside the shooter.
Collins refuses to submit his gun for testing, and Lewin muses that Collins, who grew up in a middle-class neighborhood, is attempting to emulate a stereotypical macho persona of hip-hop culture. Wilson refuses to give evidence against his boss, and McCoy is forced to fly to Los Angeles to interview Lawrence, though she too denies any knowledge of the shooter's identity. Left with no other options, the detectives arrest Collins, though he quickly makes bail. Lewin considers putting a black A.D.A. in the second-chair position, knowing that the case will have racial undertones, but McCoy and Southerlyn object, arguing that only the facts are important. Amanda testifies about Bone's encounter with Wilson and Collins, though the defense attorney observes that she seems more interested in publicity than the truth. McCoy calls Lawrence to the stand, and she admits that Collins owns the type of gun used in the killing but reiterates that they departed the nightclub right before the shooting.
Collins admits that he argued with Bone right before the killing, but again denies any involvement. McCoy ponders the details of the case and finally realizes that Lawrence was in fact the real shooter, guessing that Collins is covering for her out of a combination of chivalry and a desire to boost his tough-guy image. McCoy confronts Lawrence, trying to guilt her into saving the man she loves from a long prison sentence, and she finally admits that Bone physically grabbed her and made crude comments during his confrontation with Collins and that she shot him in retaliation. However, as the gun is gone and neither party will testify against one another, McCoy and Southerlyn are forced to let both Collins and Lawrence go free, noting that Collins' fans appear disappointed by his apparent innocence. Commercials deleted.
