Costas and Couric highlight a recognition of the five major Native American nations in Utah: the Ute, Goshutes, Shoshone, Paiutes and Navajo, featuring a flute performance by the five nations and audience, the millennium drum dance, Robbie Robertson performing the Unity stomp dance, and a blessing of athletes by the Native American chiefs. Sports commentators Jim McKay, Costas, and Couric narrate the history of settlers and Mormon pioneers in Utah, and the expansion of the railroad into the west. This portion features an ice skating performance, a song by the band Eclipse, and a choreographed hoedown. Costas, Couric and McKay cover a performance of "Call of the Champion," composed by John Williams and performed by the Utah Symphony and Mormon Tabernacle Choir. Costas, Couric and McKay cover an announcement by the president and CEO of the Olympic committee, Mitt Romney, and president of the International Olympic Committee Jacques Rogges, who address the audience and athletes.
