BROOKLYN NINE-NINE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this comedy series about a squad of goofy Brooklyn cops and their work under their new no-nonsense captain.

In this episode, Detective Jake Peralta quickly solves an electronic store robbery, much to the annoyance of his partner, Detective Amy Santiago, with whom he has an ongoing bet about their number of arrests. At the station, Peralta introduces a new murder case, and Detective Charles Boyle asks for secretary Gina Linetti's help in asking out the tough Detective Rosa Diaz. Peralta immediately makes a bad impression with their new captain, Ray Holt. The captain talks to Sergeant Jeffords, who admits that he has "lost his edge" since becoming a father and describes the rest of the squad to him, including the "scary" Diaz, the hardworking Boyle, the tough-acting Santiago and the skilled but immature Peralta. At the murder scene, they discover that a very expensive ham was stolen, and Holt tasks Peralta and Santiago with "door duty," which soon proves to be fruitless. Diaz agrees to go out with Boyle, and Linetti tells Holt about Peralta and Santiago's wager, in which Peralta has gambled his car and Santiago has gambled a date with the two of them.

Peralta and Santiago soon track down Ratko, a highly suspicious butcher who likely killed the victim for the priceless ham; he quickly escapes despite the detectives' bumbling attempts to capture him. Holt, already annoyed with Peralta's refusal to comply with dress code, sends him to the records room as punishment. Boyle tells him about Holt's famous capture of the feared "Disco Strangler" years ago as Santiago gloats about his failure. Diaz soon changes her mind about Boyle, and while looking through the records, Peralta makes a connection between Ratko and a group of Serbian thugs. The clue leads to a stakeout at a storage unit with Holt and Santiago. While there, Peralta is shocked to learn that Holt was previously held back in his profession because he is gay. Diaz admits to Boyle that he is "sweet." They catch Ratko and Peralta nearly loses him again, but Holt and the others help to capture him. Peralta finally realizes that Holt insists upon formal dress to signify their unity as a team. Commercials deleted.
