ORIGINALS, THE: ALWAYS AND FOREVER {UNAIRED PILOT} (TV)

Summary

The first in this fantasy drama series, a spin-off of "The Vampire Diaries," about the three "original" vampires: siblings Niklaus, Rebekah and Elijah Mikaelson. In this episode, Klaus explains that he fled his home of New Orleans centuries ago, but has now returned to discover the truth about the witches' plot against him. In a bar, Hayley talks to Jane Anne, who knows that she is a werewolf and sends her off into the bayou for answers about her family. In the cemetery, Sophie worries that they will be "caught," but Jane Anne states that they must fight for their town. As Hayley drives into the bayou, Jane Anne casts a spell that causes her car to break down and then renders her unconscious as a group of witches surrounds her. Elsewhere, Klaus' siblings speculate about his actions in New Orleans, and while Rebekah hopes that the witches will kill him, Elijah decides to follow his brother. Klaus talks to a witch who knows that he is a hybrid, but she refuses to help him, saying that she cannot break Marcel's rules. Klaus finds him in a bar and Marcel happily greets his old friend and sire. Klaus observes that Marcel's friends are all "daywalkers," wearing special rings made for them by witches, and Marcel states that he now controls all the magic in New Orleans. When Klaus asks about Jane Anne, Marcel has her brought before a large group of vampires. He accuses her of "breaking the rules" and practicing magic, and though she denies everything, he kills her to cheers from the crowd.

Klaus is angered, having wanted answers from Jane Anne, but Marcel states that he needed to make a "show of force." Klaus finds Sophie and questions her, but she refuses to talk, wanting to avoid Jane Anne's fate. He then finds that Marcel has sent two vampires to tail him and orders them away, and they soon find Sophie talking to a shrine for Jane Anne. Before they can attack her, however, Elijah arrives and kills them both. Klaus confronts Marcel, and he tells him about how he has come to control the city, alluding to a "secret weapon" that allows him to monitor the witches' magic. He then spots a human bartender, Camille, and considering feeding on her. Elijah finds Klaus and takes him to the cemetery, where Sophie declares that Marcel is "out of control" and that Klaus must aid in stopping him. She then brings out Hayley and reveals that she is pregnant with Klaus' child, explaining that he is "nature's loophole" because he was born a werewolf, not a vampire. Sophie threatens to kill Hayley if Klaus does not help her defeat Marcel, and he calls her bluff and leaves. Elijah argues that they can "start over" and reclaim their family with the new child, but Klaus still refuses. Elijah calls Rebekah, who states that Klaus cannot redeem himself now, and Klaus finds Marcel again, who angrily declares that he has become the "king" of New Orleans since Klaus left and demands his respect, vowing to show no mercy to those who break his rules. Klaus then attacks Thierry, however, and points out that Marcel cannot kill him for it, as he is immortal.

Klaus talks to Camille and seems to reconsider his position. Elijah tells Klaus that the witches cannot leave the city because they draw their power from their ancestors' graves, and Klaus realizes that he wants to resume control of New Orleans and decides to stay after all and work with Sophie to protect his "heir" and bring down Marcel. Sophie explains that Klaus must go undercover with Marcel's daywalkers and become his trusted ally again, though he must control his temper and not kill him. Klaus heals Thierry and wins Marcel's friendship back, and Elijah declares that he will now protect Hayley and the child. Elsewhere, Marcel's "secret weapon" is revealed to be a powerful young woman named Davina who has the ability to sense witches' magic and whom he is holding captive. Commercials deleted.
