TREME: SHAME, SHAME, SHAME (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about a group of New Orleans residents and their attempts to rebuild their lives in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In this episode, LaDonna has unsettling dreams about Daymo as Creighton records another YouTube video addressed to President Bush, coldly urging him to find his "better angel" and keep his promises. Later, Toni asks about his novel-in-progress, but Creighton is more interested in planning the upcoming Krewe du Vieux parade. Toni provides Detective Terry Colson with information about Antoine's trombone, stolen by the cops, and LaDonna is pleased when Riley is finally served with legal papers for failing to complete her roof repairs. Davis recruits a number of musicians to play on his "epistle" to the government, and they later record a song shaming Bush for his inaction in New Orleans following the storm, prompting Davis to consider running for city council himself. Toni and LaDonna are told by the A.D.A. that the overpass photos do not necessarily prove that Daymo was in police custody at the time of the storm, and Albert, arriving at the courthouse to demand the reopening of the Calliope projects, encounters Gralen and his fellow musicians, who are upset about the loss of their parade permit.
Davina arrives in town to see the parade, and Annie questions Arnie, who is still staying in the house, about Sonny's drug use in Houston. At Desautel's, Roy Blount Jr. enthusiastically praises Creighton's YouTube rants, and Toni makes a surprising discovery when Sofia aids her in reading water-ruined police documents. Janette tells her that Daymo worked at her restaurant for a few months before the storm, but disappeared on the day itself. Antoine meets with an excited fan from Japan, Toyama, and Albert confronts Councilman SIngleton about the federally-funded neighborhoods that remain boarded up, arguing that their former residents, including the rest of his tribe, need to be able to return home. Toyama talks eagerly with Antoine about his music and offers to replace his missing trombone, though they nearly fall into an argument about music history trivia while at the shop. Janette is surprised when several prestigious chefs arrive unexpectedly at her restaurant, and they somewhat grudgingly praise her cooking when she serves them some local cuisine.
The second line parade, the first since the storm, finally gets underway, and Antoine, Sonny, Annie and many others enjoy themselves and dance to the music, though Creighton's Krewe du Vieux meeting goes badly when some members argue for the need for a "serious acknowledgement" of the storm during the typically-humorous event. Creighton is thrilled, however, when he joins the parade and sees just how many residents have returned for the celebration, and Toni finds him and happily explains about her breakthrough with Daymo. LaDonna asks Daymo's friend Marcus if her brother resumed his drug use before disappearing, and Janette tells Davis about her restaurant success as he shows her his new single. Someone at the parade suddenly begins shooting into the crowd, and Sonny is alarmed when Annie disappears in the chaos with Arnie. Davis gets into a fight at a bar when he uses tactless racial language and is kindly taken in by the neighbors he has antagonized, and while browsing at a pawn shop for a replacement trombone for his teacher Nelson, Antoine finds his own instrument for sale. When Toni confronts Colson about his cops' criminal actions, he points out that the police are just as distraught as everyone else is and admits that they are "not ready" for a resurgence of city crime. Creighton tells Toni that his agent wants his book advance back, as he has not come through with a completed novel in several years, though the money itself is long gone, and Sonny finally kicks Arnie out of his house.
