30 ROCK: THE MOMS (TV)
Summary
One in this comedy series about the cast and production team of a sketch comedy television show. In this episode, Jack panics upon hearing that they are doing a special Mother Day's episode of "TGS" featuring the staff's own mothers, including the formidable Colleen Donaghy. As the others show their moms around, Pete offers to hire an actress to play Tracy's absent parent, and when Colleen attempts to interrogate Jack about his love life, he assigns Kenneth to "entertain" her. Jenna is horrified to learn that her brassy mother Verna has made matching outfits for them to wear on TV, and all of the matriarchs offer Liz their opinions on her current single status. Jack then reminds Verna that he is paying her to show kindness to Jenna for once, and Tracy takes offense when Pete selects a non-recognizable infomercial actress to play his mother, feeling that he deserves someone more prestigious. Colleen orders Jack to choose between Avery and Nancy once and for all, and when Liz asks her own mother if she should heed the others' advice and simply "settle" for the next available man, Margaret shocks her by revealing that Liz's father was her second choice, as she gave up the chance to marry the true love of her life: famed astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Annoyed with Jenna's behavior, Verna threatens to leave, but Jack sternly reminds her that she must stay to earn the rest of her "fee." Tracy argues with his "mother" Novella, who is equally displeased to have him as a "son," and Colleen tracks down Avery and frankly warns her that Jack has "other irons in the fire." Liz tells Jack the startling truth about her almost-paternity, and Jack reveals that he knows Buzz Aldrin and offers to introduce her. Tracy and Jenna decide that they cannot choose their mothers any more than their mothers can choose them, and Avery confronts an embarrassed Jack about his other girlfriend. Liz talks to Aldrin, who reveals that he has plenty of flaws and is not the "perfect man" that Margaret may have believed him to be, and Tracy and Jenna make up with their respective "parents" in time for the show. Liz tells Margaret that she was right to settle for Dick Lemon after all, and when Jack lambasts Colleen for meddling in his love life, she points out that he tends to make terrible decisions about women, though admits that she cannot now truly make his choice for him. Later, all of the moms sing onstage with their children for the "TGS" special. Commercials deleted.
