ER {E.R.}: SLEEPLESS IN CHICAGO (TV)

Summary

One in this series of dramas about the emergency room team of an inner-city Chicago hospital.

In this episode, Hathaway continues visiting Tatiana, hoping to move ahead with her plans to foster the young girl, and Greene tries to figure out how his hopes of becoming an attending will gel with his wife's job in Milwaukee. A patient comes in with a strange rash, likely from one of the many experimental drugs he is taking. Hicks sternly orders Benton, who has been working for two days straight, to take a nap before treating another patient. Ross treats Bonnie, a young girl with a suspicious burn, and a man is brought in after suffering a seizure during a pricey diner's breakfast. An elderly man, Joseph Klein, is brought in after falling down a flight of stairs, and the doctors manage to stabilize him before realizing that he has signed a "do not resuscitate" order. Doctor John Koch from MIT arrives to observe the hospital's processes and suggests to Greene that he and his wife relocate to Kenosha, halfway between each of their jobs. Carter tries to assist Klein, who is unable to speak, and Wright expresses doubts about Hathaway's plan to foster Tatiana at the start of her marriage.

Benson takes a brief nap and begs Carter to continue bringing him surgical cases. Under questioning, Bonnie's mother admits that she intentionally burned her daughter to stop her from "touching herself," as her own mother did to her. The man from the diner makes a remarkable recovery and begins scamming everyone in the hospital out of their cash. Koch observes Benson's "territorial" behavior with patients and tells Lewis about his ideas for a more "harmonious, feminine model." Ross and Hathaway call the cops on Bonnie's mother, who becomes hysterical when separated from her daughter. Ross voices his support of Hathaway's foster plans. Carter continues trying to comfort Klein, who is long estranged from his only son, though Benson tells him not to bother "wasting time on a DNR." Greene warms to the Kenosha idea as Benson falls asleep treating a drunken man's mild injury; when he is called in to assist with a teenager and a cop both shot in a robbery, he pulls off an impressive save despite his fatigue. Leeds, exasperated that Ross has gotten into another tussle with a patient, is intrigued by his request for a date. Morgenstern, planning to leave for another hospital, tells Greene that he is "almost a lock" for the attending job.

Carter stays with Klein until he passes away and falls behind on his notes, prompting Benson to note that Carter "doesn't think like a surgeon." Hathaway is crushed to learn that her suicide attempt of the previous year has rendered her ineligible to foster and turns to Ross for comfort. Benson finally returns home to his family, left alone with his frail mother Mae as Walter departs for the night. Lewis is pleased when Koch invites her to join his new hospital's state-of-the-art advisory board – but then finds that he is, in fact, a delusional psych patient. Greene tells his wife about the Kenosha idea, but she decides that the marriage is over, feeling that their year apart has proved unsuccessful and that he is not willing to make personal sacrifices for her. At home, Mae takes a serious tumble after Benson falls asleep; he rushes her back to the ER, deeply guilt-ridden about his momentary lapse in caring for her. Commercials deleted.
