BOARDWALK EMPIRE: THE EMERALD CITY (TV)

Summary

One in this historical drama series based on the nonfiction book by Nelson Johnson about the gangsters and bootleggers who rose to power in Atlantic City during the years of Prohibition. In this episode, Richard's idyllic dream about Odette is interrupted by Emily, who is terrified by the sight of his unmasked face despite his frantic apologies. Sebso lies to Elliot and Van Alden about his "self-defense" killing of Winslow, and Elliot angrily blames Van Alden for bungling the case against Nucky. Angela and Jimmy reconnect romantically when he praises her art, and Nucky and Margaret banter about the women's vote. Margaret hesitantly tells him that Richard frightens the children, but Nucky reminds her that he is there for protection. In New York, Rothstein angrily chastises Doyle and his associates for the failed hit on Nucky, while in Chicago Al annoys Torrio with his childish antics during a meeting with Jake Guzik. Doyle visits Nucky, who immediately threatens to kill him, but Doyle quickly tells him everything, explaining that the D'Alessios were behind the shooting as well as the lynching of Chalky's man. He explains about Luciano's association with Lansky, saying that he pretended to barter with Chalky just to see how much booze he had, but they are interrupted by the news that the Nineteenth Amendment has indeed passed.

Margaret invites a timid Richard to join them as she reads to her children, and he wins over Emily and Teddy by playfully telling them that he is the Tin Woodsman from the story. Margaret enjoys a rare drink to celebrate the women's vote with Nucky, but she is dismayed when he asks her to convince Atlantic City's women to vote for the unqualified Edward Bader for mayor, knowing that Nucky controls Bader and wants to remain in power. The Darmodys enjoy a stroll on the boardwalk, but Tommy points out "Mommy's kissing friend" when they pass the photo shop and, misunderstanding, Jimmy violently attacks Robert in front of everyone. Van Alden visits Margaret and attempts to persuade her to turn on Nucky, but she is alarmed by his obsessive determination to "save" her and throws him from the home. Al and Torrio attend Guzik's son's bar mitzvah, and Al seems moved when a guest explains that "this party" symbolizes the boy's acceptance of adult responsibility. Nucky meets with Chalky and asks him to pretend to accept Lansky's offer after all, promising that he will eventually kill Rothstein. At Nucky's encouragement, Margaret delivers a convincing speech to the women in support of Bader's campaign, though she seems uncomfortable with her own words.

Al formally apologizes to Torrio, and Torrio agrees to give his protégé another chance. Chalky meets with Meyer and agrees to sell to him, but realizes something when one of the D'Alessios casually mentions his prized Packard. Angela finds Mary and, agreeing that they do not truly love their husbands, resolve to take Tommy and flee to Paris together. At home, Margaret apologizes to Richard for treating him unkindly, but he tells her that he often "can't recall who he was before," and she seems troubled by the thought. Van Alden ventures into a speakeasy and meets up with Lucy, with whom he shares a drink and then a vigorous bedroom encounter, to which he reacts with great shame. Nucky and Jimmy find that Chalky has abandoned the fake deal, having figured out that the D'Alessios lynched his associate. Jimmy shoots one of the brothers for "mouthing off" and Chalky strangles the other, but they allow Lansky to live as a message to Rothstein. Nucky then heads home and thanks Margaret for her assistance with Bader, but she regards herself in the mirror, now unsure about her own true identity.
