25th ANNVERSARY ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME CONCERT, THE (TV)

Summary

This televised concert special, recorded over two nights at Madison Square Garden in New York, celebrates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. Host Tom Hanks offers opening remarks about the history of rock and roll music and then introduces Jerry Lee Lewis, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986, who performs "Great Balls of Fire." Crosby, Stills & Nash (inducted 1997) take the stage for "Woodstock" and "Almost Cut My Hair," after which they introduce Bonnie Raitt (inducted 2000), who joins them for "Love Has No Pride." Jackson Browne (inducted 2004) then joins them for "The Pretender." Next, James Taylor (inducted 2000) joins Crosby, Stills & Nash for "Love the One You're With," and Stevie Wonder (inducted 1989) performs "For Once in My Life." Smokey Robinson (inducted 1987) performs "Tears of a Clown," and Wonder introduces John Legend, who joins him for "The Way You Make Me Feel." Wonder introduces B.B. King (inducted 1987), who performs "The Thrill is Gone," and Wonder next performs "Higher Ground" with Sting (inducted 2003 with The Police). Sting then performs "Roxanne," and Jeff Beck (inducted 2009) joins Wonder for "Superstition."

Footage of various notable artists of the past, including Elvis Presley, the Everly Brothers and the Ronettes is shown, and Paul Simon (inducted 2001) takes the stage and performs "You Can Call Me Al." David Crosby and Graham Nash join Simon for "Here Comes the Sun," and Simon introduces Dion DiMucci, who performs "The Wanderer." Little Anthony and the Imperials (inducted 2009) perform "Just Two Kinds of People in the World," and Art Garfunkel (inducted 1990 with Simon) joins Simon onstage for "The Sound of Silence," "The Boxer," and "Bridge over Troubled Water." Further footage is shown of prominent R&B artists, including Sam Cooke and Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin (inducted 1987) takes the stage and performs "Baby I Love You" and "Don't Play That Song (You Lied)", which she dedicates to late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun. Franklin then introduces Annie Lennox, who joins her for "Chain of Fools." Metallica (inducted 2009) appears next and performs "For Whom the Bells Tolls," then introducing Lou Reed (inducted 1996 with The Velvet Underground), who joins them on "Sweet Jane." Ozzy Osbourne performs "Iron Man" and "Paranoid," after which Ray Davies joins Metallica for "All Day and All of the Night." Metallica then performs "Enter Sandman." Next, U2 (inducted 2005) takes the stage and performs "Vertigo" and "Magnificent," and they invite Bruce Springsteen (inducted 1999) and Patti Smith (inducted 2007) onstage for "Because the Night."

U2 Frontman Bono comments on the meaning of rock and roll, then performing "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" along with Springsteen, followed by "Gimme Shelter" with Mick Jagger (inducted in 1989 with the Rolling Stones) and Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson and Will i Am of The Black Eyed Peas. Jagger performs "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of" with U2 before departing, and U2 then performs "Beautiful Day." Clips of blues musicians, including Robert Johnson and Howlin' Wolf, are then shown, and Jeff Beck and others comment on the influence of blues music on the likes of himself and Jimi Hendrix. Beck and Sting take the stage again and perform "People Get Ready." Beck then introduces George "Buddy" Guy (inducted 2005), who joins Beck on "Let Me Love You Baby." Billy Gibbons (inducted 2004 with ZZ Top) then joins Beck on "Rice Pudding" and "Foxy Lady," and Beck concludes his set with "A Day in the Life." Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band take the stage, and Springsteen introduces Sam Moore (inducted 1992 with Sam & Dave), who performs "Hold On, I'm Coming" and "Soul Man." Springsteen next welcomes Tom Morello, who joins him for "The Ghost of Tom Joad," followed by John Fogerty (inducted 1993 with Creedence Clearwater Revival), who performs "Fortunate Son." Springsteen then comments on Roy Orbison's (inducted 1987) innovative song style, and then performs "Oh, Pretty Woman" with Fogerty, followed by his own song "Jungleland." Next, Springsteen introduces Darlene Love (later inducted in 2011), who performs "A Fine, Fine Boy," followed by Billy Joel (inducted 1999), who performs "New York State of Mind," followed by "Born to Run." Moore, Fogerty, Love, Browne and Morello then rejoin Springsteen and Joel for the finale, "(Your Love Keeps Taking Me) Higher and Higher."
