PALEY CENTER FOR MEDIA, THE: PALEYFEST 2013: NEW GIRL {LONG VERSION}

Summary

One in a series of seminars presented as part of The Paley Center for Media's 30th William S. Paley Television Festival in Los Angeles. Held this year at the Saban Theatre in Los Angeles, the festival celebrates the excellence and diversity of American television and is dedicated to television's creative community. This PALEYFEST 2013 seminar honors "New Girl," a comedy series about an awkward young teacher, Jess, who moves in with three male roommates after a breakup. Betsy Scolnik (vice-president, The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles) offers opening remarks before introducing the evening's moderator, Rob Moynihan (L.A. correspondent, TV Guide). Moynihan then introduces executive producer/creator Elizabeth Meriwether, who sets up the episode "Quick Hardening Caulk," which is screened in its entirety. (For synopsis and credits, see ACCNUM 110612). After the screening, Moynihan moderates the following panelists: Meriwether; executive producer and director Jake Kasdan; executive producers Katherine Pope, Brett Baer, and Dave Finkel; and cast members Zooey Deschanel (Jess), Max Greenfield (Schmidt), Jake Johnson (Nick), Lamorne Morris (Winston), and Hannah Simone (Cece). The panelists discuss topics which include: recent developments in the relationship between the characters portrayed by Johnson and Deschanel; the reasons that the producers were resistant to the idea of a relationship between principals; the process of convincing Rob Reiner and Jamie Lee Curtis to play Zooey's parents; an upcoming episode involving the death of Johnson's character's father; guest stars who have appeared on "New Girl," including Dermot Mulroney (Russell) and Brenda Song (Daisy); a drinking game invented by the show's writers called "True American"; the show's use of flashbacks to add depth to characters, and an upcoming episode consisting entirely of flashbacks; and plans for the show's third season. Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: the extent to which Meriwether's personal life informs the content of the show; Simone's thoughts on her character entering into an arranged marriage; the inspiration Greenberg drew upon to portray his character's negative traits; Deschanel's hopes that her sister Emily will take a break from "Bones" to guest star on "New Girl"; Deschanel; and the cast's use of improvisation and "alt-lines."
