MODERN FAMILY: WHEN A TREE FALLS (TV)

Summary

One in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, Haley is tasked with picking up garbage after a run-in with the law, and Cam is distressed to learn that a beloved tree in the park is set to be cut down. Jay enlists Claire to keep an eye on Gloria, who has "pregnancy brain," and when Manny and Luke attend their friend Doug's sports-themed birthday party, Jay finds himself roped into hanging out with Phil and the other fathers. Cam impulsively climbs the tree and refuses to come down, determined to save it from destruction, but he then receives a call to fulfill his understudy duties and fill in as the lead in the local play, and Mitchell is forced to take his place in the tree. Alex attempts to take a bad photograph of Haley, wanting revenge for a similar prank from the past, but she ends up getting into a series of mishaps as she spies on the cleaning crew.

Phil is frustrated when Jay wins over the other dads by telling embarrassing stories about his hapless son-in-law, and Mitchell, though accused of "enabling" his eccentric partner, admits that the tree is a "home" and should not be destroyed. During a meandering trip to CostCo, Claire scolds Gloria for failing to pay attention to her surroundings, but she herself is then hauled in for questioning when she forgets to pay for a sweatshirt. Phil eventually takes out his frustrations on Jay in a "boxing" ring, and Cam, still dressed in his outrageous "Cats" costume, returns to the park and resumes his place in the tree, hoping to make his daughter proud of his commitment to the cause. Gloria saves Claire by pretending to go into labor, proving that she is more sharp-witted than she seems, and Jay confesses to Phil that he is worried about being an older father to his new baby. Phil is pleased at his rare show of vulnerability, though less so when he finds that the non-athletic Manny is making friends by sharing goofy Phil stories too. Alex learns a bitter lesson about karma when Haley catches her in another humiliating scenario, and Cam is delighted when his "bizarre protest" makes the paper – next to an unfavorable "Cats" review. Includes commercials and promos.
