PRIVATE PRACTICE: AFTERSHOCK {SIXTH SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The sixth and final season premiere in this medical drama series spun off from "Grey’s Anatomy" that chronicles the lives of Dr. Addison Montgomery and her friends and fellow doctors at Oceanside Wellness Group in Los Angeles. In this episode, which portrays a single day from the many characters' points of view, Violet awakens to find a text from Pete saying that he has "gone for a run" and loves her. After a minor earthquake, she heads to work, determined to distract herself from her worries about Pete's hearing regarding his decision to take his patient off life support. She then attempts to mediate a reunion between the newly-sober Ed Diamanti and his estranged and pregnant daughter Debra, but she refuses to forgive him for his past sins. She then goes into labor and heads for the hospital, and Addison admits to Violet that she still has doubts about Jake. When Violet and Cooper arrive at court, they find that Pete never arrived, and Violet guesses that he has fled the country rather than face jail and declares her husband a coward, though she then receives a call from his phone. Earlier, Jake awakens and Addison questions him about his patient's many phone calls, and she later admits to Violet that Jake's highly appealing nature to women makes her feel insecure.

Jake assists Debra, who is on her own, and she frets that she will be a poor parent like her father. Addison performs a check-up on a nervous Charlotte and then finally admits to Jake that she is "not herself" with him and is trying too hard to impress him. At home, Cooper is thrilled to learn that Charlotte is pregnant, though she is pessimistic about it. Sheldon receives flowers at work, and Addison prepares to remove Charlotte's IUD, knowing that she could miscarry if it is done improperly. Cooper excitedly tells Violet about the pregnancy as they head for court, later chatting with Mason about the idea of a younger sibling. Charlotte is sure that she is indeed losing the pregnancy, but gets a surprise when Addison performs an ultrasound. Amelia receives her one-year sobriety chip and makes a heartfelt speech about the group's positive effect on her life, assuring her friend Ed that it is not too late to make a change in his life. Sam performs a physical on Sheldon, who reveals that he is still casually seeing his ex-wife, with whom he disagreed about having children. He receives flowers from her and then talks with Amelia, commending her on her strength in getting sober, but is surprised when Sam pulls him aside to discuss his exam.

Earlier, Sam and Stephanie enjoy breakfast together, though at work he finds that their "secret" relationship is common knowledge to everyone except Sheldon. Addison apologizes to him for choosing Jake, but he assures her that he is fine. Stephanie is pleased to be "outed," and Sam then encounters Ed, who collapses from a cardiac event. As they treat him, Ed explains that he was motivated by Amelia's speech to make things right with his daughter. Sam and Jake decide that they are officially "okay" with one another, and Sheldon broods with a drink as Debra visits Ed with her newborn son, finally ready to forgive him. Charlotte angrily informs Cooper that they are actually having triplets, and Jake declares that he is moving in with Addison, explaining that he waited for her and is now confident in their relationship. A stunned Violet then tells Cooper that she received a call from a police officer informing her that Pete fell off the path while running in the canyon and suffered a heart attack, saying that she does not know how to tell their three-year-old that his father is dead.
