BULLWINKLE SHOW, THE: UPSIDAISIUM {EP. 59, 60} (TV)

Summary

One in this animated series about two friends – a gormless moose named Bullwinkle and an intelligent flying squirrel named Rocky -- and their frequent encounters with their arch enemies, Soviet spies Boris Badenov and Natasha. Rocky drags Bullwinkle through the harsh desert; he decides to walk after receiving a few too many cactus-related injuries. Meanwhile, Boris and Natasha climb out of the wreckage and contact Fearless Leader, who berates Boris for his incompetence. The desert heat continues to beat down on Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Bullwinkle proclaims that he would give away anything for water. At that moment Boris appears in the guise of "Gunga Drain," an Indian water-seller, who offers to give Bullwinkle water in exchange for the deed to the mine. However, Rocky is suspicious and warns Bullwinkle not to make the exchange. Before they can leave, "Gunga" presents them with a pair of "chameleons" as souvenirs, which are actually deadly desert scorpions. Rocky soon discovers this deception and he and Bullwinkle press on. Boris reveals to Natasha that the "water" he planned to give to Rocky and Bullwinkle was actually a deadly substance. In the desert, a helicopter piloted by an unknown figure chases Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Bullwinkle's antlers get stuck between the wheels. Bullwinkle bounces about, stuck to the helicopter, and Rocky's efforts to rescue him only succeed in getting him stuck as well. Also includes an "Aesop and Son" story about a fox and a stork. The fox invites the stork over for dinner, hoping to endear himself to the community and disprove the negative preconceptions of foxes as crafty and thieving. The stork arrives and cannot see past his own prejudices, labeling the fox a "chicken-snatcher." The fox's situation deteriorates when a chicken tries to befriend him and the stork continues to see this as evidence to prove his preconceptions. As the chicken invites the fox over for dinner, the fox mentions he has come into money which he hopes to use to help the community, and the stork suddenly takes interest. He invites the fox over for dinner and the fox decides to go, missing his appointment with the chicken. Soon he finds that he cannot eat the stork's food and he leaves to eat with the chicken. The two become friends and soon the fox uses his wealth to improve the chicken society's infrastructure. Aesop Junior takes away the moral: "if a chicken invites you to dinner, accept, for he may grow to be thirty feet tall." Aesop finds that the moral is truer than he thinks. In "Peabody's Improbable History," Sherman and Peabody travel back in time to the court of King Frederick and Queen Isabella of Spain in 1492, where they help Christopher Columbus convince them to fund his expedition to prove that the world is round. At first Columbus is unwilling to go on the expedition himself, but a gangplank knocks him unconscious and Sherman and Peabody drag him aboard the ship. A globe-maker named Gaspar Vallejo, feeling threatened by Columbus's expedition, decides to enlist as a navigator and try to sabotage the trip. His sabotage takes the form of steering them into Africa, where they nearly plummet off of Victoria Falls. Peabody tricks Gaspar into knocking himself off the ship, thus allowing Columbus to complete his voyage without further interruption. Other highlights include Bullwinkle reading "The Horn," or "Little Boy Blue" during "Bullwinkle's Corner"; and a "The World of Commander McBragg" segment. Commercials deleted. This is the second of two programs on B:07979.
