BODY OF PROOF: GOING VIRAL {PART 1 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about compassionate Philadelphia-based medical examiner Megan Hunt and her team.
In the first half of this two-part episode, Dani Alvarez accepts a drink from Marcel Trevino while at a nightclub. Peter arrives just in time to see a severely ill Dani stumble outside and be struck by a car, then die in his arms. Megan, Kate and Ethan assume that Marcel spiked her drink, but Marcel -- during his interrogation -- lapses into a coma. Dozens more patients begin abruptly dying after displaying similar symptoms. Alarmed by the fact that the patients seem to have nothing in common, the team tracks down the "patient zero" with whom the strange infection started. CDC Dr. Charlie Stafford then swoops in to take over the case, much to Megan's frustration. After a thorough decontamination, Megan tries to convince Charlie to allow her team to assist with the investigation; elsewhere, a grieving Peter calls Dani's family to break the bad news.
The death count rises to 26 as Charlie suggests that Megan and the others are "too emotionally involved" in the outbreak because of Dani, though Megan counters that he is too impersonal to notice the smaller clues. A YouTube video then surfaces in which a masked terrorist rants about the dangers of overpopulation and declares that Philadelphia is to be "sacrificed," implying that he released the presumably airborne toxin. FBI Special Agent Brendan Johnson joins the fray and demands to take over; as the victims' friends and family struggle to understand the bizarre deaths, Bud interrogates a hospitalized Marcel, who defiantly proclaims his innocence. The news media gets wind of the terrorist's threat, and one patient soon displays signs of neisseria meningitidis, a bacterium that causes meningitis. Megan argues that they do not have nearly enough proof to make a definitive statement, while elsewhere Kate is frightened when she accidentally cuts her finger, possibly exposing herself to the still-unknown deadly illness.
Brendan overrides Megan's protests and, using Peter and Dani as his "human angle," states on television that meningitis is the cause of the many deaths. Upset with his deception, Megan tries to warn Lacey to protect herself; meanwhile, teenager Terry McLeary is arrested for making threatening comments online regarding overpopulation and disease. Terry denies any wrongdoing, however, and agrees with Megan that a diagnosis of meningitis does not make sense, as only one patient has shown brain inflammation. Kate tries to hide her fear for herself as the doctors agree that the illness must be spread through blood, not air as previously thought; Peter is surprised to learn that Dani once had a sisterly relationship with a teenager in foster care. Samantha studies the YouTube video and realizes that it was filmed at an abandoned building in north Philadelphia, where they soon find several dead bodies. Noticing that the terrorist in the video has jaundiced eyes, the team concludes that he is "patient zero" and deliberately infected himself in order to spread the illness. Ethan reports that antibiotics seem to be helping the remaining infected patients; when Kate agrees to address the public on TV, Megan urges her to tell the truth, rather than parroting Brendan's lie. As she begins to repeat the meningitis story, Ethan tells Megan that the antibiotics have not worked after all and yet more people are now dead. Kate, starting to panic, admits that the infected terrorist is "still out there" before collapsing in front of the cameras. Includes commercials and promos.
