BODY OF PROOF: GOING VIRAL {PART 2 OF 2} (TV)
Summary
One in this dramatic series about compassionate Philadelphia-based medical examiner Megan Hunt and her team.
In the second half of this two-part episode, Megan and Charlie Stafford rush to resuscitate Kate when she collapses from the still-unknown pathogen, and as Special Agent Brendan Johnson scrambles to figure out the "cluster areas" in which many of the patients were presumably infected, Megan and Charlie try to work out the stages of the illness; they realize that it always concludes with a fatal brain hemorrhage. Concluding that patients usually die within 72 hours, they wonder if the killer is already in their morgue; elsewhere, Peter breaks into Dani's apartment and continues searching for clues. When a reporter asks for a statement, Peter denounces "John Q. Plague" as a coward. When Megan visits a quarantined Kate, they realize that suspect and "walking pharmacy" Marcel Trevino has somehow survived longer than three days, wondering if one of the many drugs in his system is somehow saving his life.
Megan and Peter spar over his absence, with Peter protesting that he needs time to grieve Dani's death. Elsewhere, the killer is offended by Peter's on-air comments, subsequently calling into a news show to rant about his "noble" actions. The cops trace the call to a bar, where they find no perp but traces of blood evidence; as Kate tries to comfort a frightened Marcel, the team deduces that Marcel and the killer are two different people, both taking the drug interferon. Charlie finally realizes that the mystery illness is Marburg, the "nastier bastard cousin" of Ebola. Megan guesses that the CDC is in the process of developing a cure for the rare illness, and Curtis visits a deteriorating Kate as Charlie and Megan sneak into the quarantined ward with the experimental drug. She is upset when he decides to test the "cure" on Marcel instead of Kate – but Marcel then dies, leaving the doctors more hopeless than ever.
Peter, still obsessing over Dani's movements on the day of her death, realizes that she and Marcel took the same city bus, as did many other "outliers" who seem to have no connection to the infection clusters. Security footage reveals the identity of "John Q. Plague," the day's first bus passenger, as biochemist Jacob Mount. Noticing that a few other victims have bedbug bites, they trace Jacob to a local motel; finding him gone, they deduce that he plans to continue spreading Marburg to the city via the subway system. When they finally find the ailing Jacob, he belligerently defends his plans to continue decimating the population. Peter shoots him dead. Later, Charlie admits that he was fired from the CDC for stealing the drug that killed Marcel, but Megan figures out that Marcel, a serious alcoholic, died as a result of his severe liver damage, not from Charlie's test. They begin administering the cure to the rest of the surviving patients. Peter meets Dani's mother and offers his condolences. Kate, now recovering and impressed with his smarts, offers the newly unemployed Charlie a position in her lab. Includes commercials and promos.
