CHICAGO FIRE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The pilot of this drama series about a squad of firefighters working in Chicago. The firefighters at a fire station in Chicago are saddened by the recent loss of one of their colleagues, Andy Darden. Matthew Casey, one of his friends, solemnly cleans out his locker. Peter Mills, a new candidate for a member of the firefighting squad, arrives to his first day at work and is shown around by some of the firefighters. The firehouse chief, Lynn Fitori, is in the process of approving the transfer of battalion chief Wallace Borden, who wishes to spend his last few years on the force in a less turbulent area. The firehouse learns that Rahm Emanuel, mayor of Chicago, will be stopping by to honor the first month since Darden's death. An alarm goes off and the firehouse rushes to the site of a car accident on a bridge. They assist a mother and daughter out of their wrecked car, and Mills apprehends the driver of the other car trying to escape on foot. The little girl, injured from shrapnel, is taken into an ambulance by paramedics Gabriela Dawson and Leslie Shay. On the way, Dawson tries to evacuate a buildup around the girl's heart, but ends up accidentally puncturing her heart, although she remains stable for the time being. They manage to get her to the hospital. Casey and another firefighter, Kelly Severide, get into an argument over an incident during the bridge accident, and Borden breaks them up. The two of them have been at odds with each other ever since Darden's death; Borden says that eventually they will have to move on. Later, Casey gives Heather, Darden's widow, his things and they talk about how she is holding up. In the bathroom, Severide secretly injects himself with a syringe of some sort of medication; he makes an effort to keep this secret from his co-workers. Christopher Hermann, a veteran firefighter, loses his house to foreclosure, forcing him to live with his in-laws. Casey talks with his estranged wife Hallie, a doctor who has recently moved to be closer to the hospital. They are both trying to keep their estrangement secret from their friends. Some of the firefighters trick Mills into asking Shay out on a date; he is mortified when Shay informs him that she is a lesbian, amusing the others a great deal. Chief Fitori confronts Dawson over her failed heart evacuation of the little girl, advising her to call her union representatives. Casey makes roast beef for the firehouse, which Severide refuses to eat. Casey and Severide again discuss their grievance with each other; Severide blames Casey for Darden's death. Borden participates in an inter-department boxing match against a representative of the police, and some of the firefighters go out to watch it. However, they are soon called away to deal with a fire raging through an apartment building. The firefighters move in and evacuate the residents while others work to vent the flames and slow their spread. The fire grows more intense and part of the building collapses, causing Casey and Hermann to fall through a destroyed fall, rendering them unconscious. Severide leads a rescue team in to save them: Casey awakens relatively unharmed but Hermann has suffered from fume inhalation. Severide and Casey manage to get everyone out of the building before they turn on the hoses. Casey congratulates Mills for his good work. Dawson and Shay inspect Hermann and find a problem with his heart from his ordeal. They rush him to the hospital, where he remains overnight. Mayor Emanuel and his entourage come upon the scene and he speaks with Chief Borden. The next morning, Dawson tells Casey about her trouble stemming from the incident with the girl, and they both leave to visit Hermann in the hospital. Mills and Borden have a discussion about Casey's advice to Mills not to be a "crow." Borden has second thoughts about his transfer and tears up his request form. Mills puts his name on what used to be Darden's locker. Several of the firefighters wait in the hospital lobby while Hermann is in surgery. Casey asks a doctor about the little girl Dawson tended to and discovers that she is stable and will be released soon, providing a great deal of comfort for Dawson. He then calls Hallie and asks to meet with her soon in an attempt to reconcile. Severide arrives, putting his quarrel with Casey on hold for the time being. The episode ends as the firefighters continue to wait for word on Hermann. Commercials deleted.
