MOB DOCTOR, THE: PILOT {SERIES PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The first in this dramatic series about Dr. Grace Devlin, who struggles to work off a family debt to the mob while maintaining her job at a Chicago hospital. In this episode, Grace recalls the first time she saw a dead body, that of the town drunk, as a child. She helps a criminal with a grisly injury received while robbing a store before hurrying back to the hospital, where she successfully operates on a young boy, Kevin, who has been shot. Federal agents then bring a man, Severino, in for emergency surgery, and though she is overworked, Grace is given the operation by her boss, Dr. White. Grace's mother Maria stops by to tell her that a young family friend, 14-year-old Susie, has been admitted to the hospital, also taking time to question Grace's boyfriend Brett about their future. Brett examines Susie and is shocked to find that she is pregnant, despite technically being a virgin. Grace learns that Severino is set to testify against mobster Paul Moretti but currently needs a bypass, and she devises a method for performing the surgery with low risk, but then receives an order to kill the man. She hurries to see Moretti, briefly stopped by his henchman, Franco, and Moretti orders her to get rid of the witness as part of the deal she made to get her brother, Danny, out of trouble with the mob. Kevin wakes up, and White gives the post-op duties to another doctor, Olivia, as Grace is busy with Severino.

Grace attempts to explain "outercouse" to Susie, who worries that her father will be furious and that she will lose her swimming scholarship because of the pregnancy. At home, Grace skirts her mother's questions and Danny chides her, reminding her that Maria is in remission from cancer. She then travels to the home of paroled mob boss Alexander Constantine to administer his insulin shots, and they chat in a friendly way as he remarks on his past mistakes. Upon learning that Susie's pregnancy is not viable and that she will need her father's consent for surgery, Grace tells Brett that revealing the girl's condition will jeopardize her future. She then receives an emergency call and hurries to the hospital, finding that little Kevin has suddenly died thanks to a medical mistake. She confronts Olivia, who says that she was overruled by the "incompetent" Dr. Flanagan. Grace calls him out on his error in front of White, and White tells Flanagan to take the weekend off so the matter can be investigated. Susie's dad arrives and Grace lies to him about her condition, saying that she has a benign cyst. Moretti calls and instructs Grace on how to sabotage Severino's operation, and she suffers a nightmare about committing the deed. In the real surgery, she declines to go through with the murder, and White notices her anxiety. Olivia is angry about Grace's actions towards Flanagan, and Brett disapproves of her lie to Susie's father.

Moretti then calls, angry that Severino survived, and Grace realizes that he is at her home and threatening her mother. She quickly drives over and engages him in a high-speed car chase which ends at Constantine's home, and Constantine ends up shooting Moretti dead to protect her. Susie's operation goes well, Brett having decided to go along with Grace's lie, and when Grace discovers that Constantine was behind the attempt on Severino's life, he admits that he has not reformed at all. He advises Grace to leave Chicago, but agrees to protect her when she says that she cannot, though she will now owe him the debt that she owed Moretti. She then reveals that the dead drunk from her childhood was in fact her abusive father, possibly killed by Constantine himself. Commercials deleted.
