MODERN FAMILY: ELECTION DAY (TV)

Summary

One in this "mockumentary" comedy series about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this episode, election day dawns and Phil is excited to become "First Husband" when Claire is elected to city councilwoman. He plans to drive elderly townspeople to the polls, while the kids man the phone bank and Cameron and Mitchell campaign around town in their "festooned" car. Haley privately reveals that she has been rejected from all but one of the colleges she applied to, but has not yet told her family. When Jay goes with Gloria to vote, he notices a woman, Dottie, at the polling place and runs away, later confessing that he briefly dated her after his divorce and ended things poorly. Cameron and Mitchell use a loudspeaker in their car to promote Claire's campaign, but soon get the idea to "make a difference" around town and promote civic responsibility. Claire has a mishap with a false tooth and a reporter gets an unflattering photo of her, and a hasty repair leads to her sounding somewhat inebriated in a radio interview. Phil picks up Luke's irascible friend Walt, who is more interested in running his errands than going to vote, much to Phil's annoyance. Alex attempts to maintain control at home, but Gloria and Luke's lack of phone skills make things difficult.

Jay attempts to hurriedly vote for his daughter, but he runs into Dottie anyway, and she makes it clear that she is still annoyed about his behavior and refuses to submit his ballot. Cam and Mitchell accidentally leave the loudspeaker on while gossiping about an acquaintance, who overhears, and they are forced to spend the rest of the day reassuring her about her upcoming wedding to a questionable man. Walt continues dawdling and then decides that Claire is not his ideal candidate, but at Phil's desperate request, decides to vote for her anyway because he "had a nice day" with Phil. In the evening, Claire returns home and thanks her family for all of their efforts, unaware of their many failures, but soon receives the news that she lost the election. Haley then tearfully admits her college rejections, and mother and daughter commiserate over their efforts. Haley then opens her last letter surrounded by her entire family, and she is thrilled to learn that she has been wait-listed. The next day, Phil and Claire discover that her much-desired stop sign has finally been erected, though it seems that the neighborhood drivers still intend to ignore it. Commercials deleted.
