MAD MEN: THE JET SET (TV)
Summary
One in this drama series about the goings-on at a New York City advertising agency in the 1960s, centering on high-level executive Don Draper.
In this episode, Roger and Jane make love in a hotel room, after which he proposes marriage and she accepts. At the office, Harry, Ken, Peggy, Smitty, Sal, and Kurt discuss a potential new ad campaign for Right Guard. Afterward, Kurt asks Peggy to accompany him to a Bob Dylan concert, leading to an enthusiastic response from Peggy. In California, Don is annoyed by his luggage having been lost, causing him to be impatient with Pete when discussing the goals of their business trip. At the hotel bar, Don is approached by Viscount Monteforte d'Alsace, commonly known as "Willy." Willy then points out Joy, a beautiful young woman who is attracted to Don. Don turns down an invitation to join Joy and her friends for dinner.
Roger discusses divorce proceedings with his lawyer, George Rothman. George assures him that Mona "wants to hurt" him. Duck interrupts and notes that he also dealt with George during divorce proceedings. Duck then asks Roger for a partnership in Sterling Cooper. Roger questions if Duck has earned it. Angered, Duck then meets with two former bosses and asks if openings exist at their firm in England. When they turn him down, Duck proposes that they buy Sterling Cooper and make him its new president. He assures them that Roger will be in need of money following his divorce.
Back in California, Pete and Don attend a seminar on warheads. Afterward, Don runs into Joy and impulsively takes her up on an offer to accompany her to Palm Springs. As Pete makes excuses with clients for Don's sudden absence, Don arrives at a sprawling mansion where he is introduced to Joy's jet-set pals before fainting from heat exhaustion. That evening, Joy tells Don that the group is next traveling to Nassau and invites him along. They're interrupted by the arrival of Christian, who insists on being with his children and getting them to bed. When Kurt picks up Peggy, she asks if he'd rather be attending the Dylan concert with a man, after which she questions why she always makes bad romantic choices. Kurt offers to give her a more modern look and subsequently gives her a stylish haircut.
The next day, Pete arrives back at Sterling Cooper and comments on Peggy's appearance. Ken finds it more significant to update Pete on Kurt having told the staff that he's gay. Duck sits with Roger and Bert and tells them that his ex-bosses have announced their interest in buying Sterling Cooper. Duck notes that he's given them five days to make an offer. Having decided against traveling with Joy, Don makes a mysterious phone call, identifying himself as Dick Whitman and making plans to get together. Finally, Don's lost luggage is left outside his home in Ossining. Commercials deleted.
The program contains a gap of approximately ten minutes, occurring at 20:50 (during which Kurt declares his homosexuality to the surprised Sterling Cooper staffers and Don beds Joy in Palm Springs before discovering that Willy is her father.)
