MODERN FAMILY: DUDE RANCH / WHEN GOOD KIDS GO BAD {THIRD SEASON PREMIERE} (TV)

Summary

The third season premiere in this comedy series, a "mockumentary" about the eccentric individuals comprising three inter-related families in Los Angeles. In this two-part episode, the family – plus Dylan – travels to a Wyoming dude ranch for vacation, and Mitch and Cam excitedly reveal that they are planning to adopt a baby boy and need to take more "rugged shots" for their family scrapbook to impress the agency. Phil resolves to wow Jay with his "manly" outdoorsy skills, and Jay is annoyed when Hank, the "real live cowboy" who runs the ranch, immediately takes a liking to Gloria. Luke ponders the best use for his illegal firecracker, and Alex encounters a charmingly dim-witted young man, Jimmy, who shocks her by "stealing" her first kiss. Phil, all too familiar with feeling rejected by a girlfriend's parents, urges Claire to be kinder to Dylan, though this backfires when Dylan misunderstands Claire's behavior as a come-on. Mitchell begins to have doubts about his ability to raise a boy, sure that he is not "butch" enough, and a horrified Claire quickly intervenes when Dylan attempts to propose to Haley in front of everyone.

Cam tries to reassure Mitch that he is sufficiently "masculine," and a distraught Haley finds that Dylan has disappeared after being chased off by Claire. Alex tries to get the kiss "back" from Jimmy and receives several more in response, and Mitch resolves to change his ways by helping Luke with his firecracker antics. As they search for Dylan, Phil defends himself to Jay, pointing out that he is a good father and husband despite his bumbling ways, though Jay is distracted by his frustration over Hank's flirtation with Gloria. Mitch is elated when he finally "does a boy thing" and blows up a birdhouse with Luke, happily telling Cam that he is ready for a son after all. Haley tells Claire that she rejected Dylan's proposal anyway but needed to do it on her own without her mother's interference, and when Dylan reappears, he explains that he has taken a job at the dude ranch and can no longer be with Haley, as they are now from "two different worlds." Jay arrives in time to "rescue" Gloria from Hank, though Hank protests that his advances were merely part of the ranch's ruggedly Western "package," and Alex bids a fond farewell to Jimmy as the family heads home.

Later, Claire is annoyed when a distracted Phil accidentally knocks her over at the grocery store, and Mitch and Cam prepare their "low-key" baby announcement to the family, though they are worried by Lily's decidedly negative attitude about her prospective new brother and speculate that Cam's "coddling" has caused her to become overly attached to her dads. Gloria angrily defends Manny when the school principal accuses him of stealing a girl's locket, though Manny nervously admits to Jay that he did indeed take it, somewhat unintentionally, as a memento. Claire is annoyed when her kids refuse to believe her claim about Phil's clumsiness, though they point out that she can never admit it when she is wrong. Haley and Alex scheme to trick Luke into moving into the "penthouse" – otherwise known as the attic – so that they can each have their own rooms, and Luke decides to play along with it. Cam struggles with "detaching" from Lily, though when Lily's teacher suggests that her problem lies in her inability to share, he realizes that he himself may be at fault after all.

Gloria takes Manny into school to confess his crime, though she ends up telling him to simply replace the necklace in the girl's locker when she realizes the extent of his guilt and distress. Claire warns Luke that he will dislike living in the attic and is irked when her kids again refuse to heed her wisdom, and Jay is not fooled when Gloria tells him that Manny was let off by the principal with a mere warning. As the family gathers for dinner, Mitch admits the truth of Lily's possessiveness to Cam, who is upset to realize that he needlessly blamed his own behavior, and Claire triumphantly produces the security footage from the grocery store and proves that Phil did indeed bump into her, though everyone else is taken aback by the amount of effort she put into the petty disagreement. Cam and Mitch accidentally blurt out their adoption plans, and when Jay reassures them that children always resent new siblings, they realize that Claire's hardheadedness dates back to childhood. Jay then tricks an anxious Manny into admitting his lack of a confession, and everyone suddenly understands the true source of Claire's stubbornness. Later, Luke finds that he dislikes the scary attic after all and is relieved when Claire "forces" him to return to his room. Includes commercials and promos.
